Position description
UC San Diego Health Sciences is one of three academic units at UC San Diego, the other two being the General Campus and Marine Sciences. Health Sciences includes three professional schools (medicine, pharmacy, and public health); more than 20 research institutes; and a growing clinical practice that include two hospitals, all working toward fulfilling the Health Sciences' tripartite mission. Led by the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, it accounts for the majority of the University's research and philanthropic portfolios, in addition to an expanding clinical footprint that spans the San Diego region. Health Sciences has more than 1,700 physicians and scientists who serve as faculty members for more than 900 residents and fellows, 600 medicine and pharmacy students, and 1,400 graduate students. Its academic programs rank among the best in the country for primary care and research.

The mission of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is to educate future pharmacists and scientists to become leaders in diverse fields, transform pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, and improve human health. The School's aims to accomplish this mission by serving as a catalyst for creative approached to education, research discovery, and multidisciplinary collaborations across health professions.

Illustrating this interdisciplinary culture, UC San Diego pharmacy and medical students develop a foundation in the biomedical sciences in common classes and shared volunteer community clinical experiences. Faculty research includes collaborations in not only medicine and public health but also chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. The proximity of the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography provides a unique opportunity to explore education and research in marine pharmacology and drugs of the sea.

The Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences seeks in its next Dean an inspirational leader with proven administrative experience to work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators, within the School and beyond, to foster excellence in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and outreach and service. The Dean will work closely with senior leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, and external agencies to achieve the goals that align with UC San Diego's future plans and academic mission.

Description

The Dean, who serves as chief academic and executive officer of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, provides strategic and intellectual leadership and administrative oversight for the School's educational, clinical, research, service, and patient care programs. The Dean collaborates with faculty, students, and staff to create and sustain a unified vision for the School and to advance the School's quality, reputation, stature, and goals. As leader and champion for the School, the Dean works with alumni and the pharmacy community of practitioners.

The Dean reports to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and meets regularly with the Vice Chancellor and the other Health Sciences leaders to provide advice and counsel. The will have a clear commitment to excellence in the education and mentorship of trainees. The Dean represents the School in campus- and University-level discussions and strategic initiatives and works with other school and college deans to advance the educational mission of the University and develop joint educational and research programs.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

 

 

  • Sets the overarching vision for the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in a manner that integrates the education, research, and clinical missions.
  • Leads long-range strategic planning efforts including establishing school-wide priorities, cross-campus partnerships, and community outreach in alignment with the UC San Diego Strategic Plan.
  • Identifies areas of strategic investment that advance the School's tripartite mission.
  • Establishes partnerships with key external academic and research organizations, both locally and nationally, to expand academic and research activities.
  • Leads efforts to launch new programs and/or initiatives to advance UC San Diego Health Sciences' national and international prominence in education, research, and clinical care.
  • Identifies areas of synergy between the School and campus units that would foster academic excellence, scientific creativity, and clinical quality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion; as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the School.

    Administrative Management
  • Recruits, mentors, and evaluates senior leaders in the School, including associate/assistant deans, program directors, etc.
  • Responsible for the educational and academic excellence, as well as financial management, of the School in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
     
  • Serves as primary fundraiser for the School, building relationships with the philanthropic community and working to secure gifts toward pharmaceutical education, research, and/or clinical care.
  • Serves as authority for administrative actions delegated from the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.

    Committee Service
  • Chairs the Council of Health Sciences Deans and Chairs, and Health Executive Committee.
  • Serves as a member of the UC San Diego Chancellor's Cabinet and acts as the Chancellor's principal advisor on all Health Sciences matters.
  • Represents UC San Diego to the University of California's Health Services Committee and participates in University-wide committees as requested by the Regents, Office of the President, or Office of the Chancellor-UC San Diego.
  • Represents UC San Diego locally, nationally, and internationally to health associations and organizations such as the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

    The Dean appointment requires a concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate series at the Associate or Full Professor level. The faculty appointment will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Series will include Ladder Rank, In-Residence with secured extramural funding, Clinical X and HS Clinical.

    Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    • Candidates must have a broad set of important skills to be successful as Dean.

    • Demonstrated dynamic leadership skills; a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking.
    • Personal record of distinguished scholarly, research (basic and/or translational), and/or clinical accomplishments in a field of clinical pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences such that the candidate qualifies for appointment as a Associate or Full Professor at UC San Diego.
    • Previous demonstrated responsibilities contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Terminal degree (PharmD, MD, PhD in health related disciplines). Candidates with an MD must have or be eligible for a California medical license as determined by the Medical Board of California. Candidates with a PharmD must be eligible for a California Pharmacy License.

    • Demonstrated success in enhancing the education and research agenda of an academic unit or program, in responding to student needs and building environments that enhance student learning, and in building programs and environments that enhance faculty research productivity.
    • Demonstrated interest, ability and proven success in generating external funding, including private fundraising for the School.
    • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; the ability to listen attentively to varied perspectives and foster a supportive and collaborative working environment.
    • A collegial, consultative management style, with the ability to be strong and decisive while also taking into account the needs and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students. The ability to collaborate and to delegate along with the ability to make difficult and timely decisions based on well-considered input.
    • A history of fostering career development for early and mid-stage faculty across multiple disciplines.
    • The ability to represent the School effectively; to build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, to be an effective advocate for the School and the advancement of the profession.
    • A clear understanding and interest in embracing new pedagogical and clinical care techniques to meet current and future needs of learners and educators.
    • A high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.
