Job Details

Primary Duties

The Research Associate is a member of the Discovery Group within Spark’s research organization and will support laboratory efforts towards the development and testing of novel gene therapy products. He/she will be responsible for:

  • Executing molecular biology and in vitro experiments (e.g., DNA cloning, qPCR, western blot, cell culture).
  • Performing routine assays across different discovery programs (e.g., ELISA, MSD/luminex multiplex assays).
  • Analyzing and documenting assay results in an electronic lab notebook, technical documents, and other reporting formats.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of new assays (e.g., cell-based, enzymatic, immunoassays). Optimizing existing assays based on in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques.

Job Function and Description

75%

Plan, prepare, and perform experiments on the bench to support Discovery Research projects. Assist research staff in the execution of experiments and general laboratory tasks as needed.

20%

Prepare sample analysis reports and accurately document work in electronic lab notebook

5%

Participate in group meetings, scientific discussions, and experiment troubleshooting.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • BA/BS in biological sciences required.
  • Generally, has 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of the technical and equipment needs in a lab. Significant hands-on experience with standard molecular and cell biology techniques.

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Experience in general and advanced lab techniques such as DNA cloning, PCR, SDS-PAGE/western blot, qPCR, ELISA, multiplex biomarker assays, plasmid design and construction, cell culture, reporter assays, etc.
  • Proven ability to work independently in hands-on laboratory setting, self-motivated to learn and develop new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Works with colleagues as a team player.
  • Familiarity of Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) a plus.
