The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC) is seeking an outstanding scientist for a tenure-eligible position to manage a complex laboratory that is critical to the VRC mission of advancing vaccines into clinical trials. The selected candidate is expected to direct a vigorous independent program focused on addressing basic hypothesis-driven analyses of clinical trials aiding in vaccine discovery and development. The program will maintain a rigorous, successful basic B-cell immunobiology research capability that supports experimental preclinical and clinical studies for a variety of infectious diseases. The overall portfolio will be focused on translational studies investigating the impact of preexisting immunity on vaccine development. Additional research priorities include identifying, developing, implementing, and performing high throughput immunological analyses that reflect various stages of product and clinical development. The program will consolidate successful elements from vaccine trial research work into a coordinated strategic program that will provide increased throughput and capacity for translational research standardized assays through to qualified or validated immunological analyses to support licensure of the clinical VRC product portfolio.

The selected candidate will be responsible for supervising assay development projects and the strategic planning and assessment of prospective assay requirements for vaccine discovery and design programs at VRC. The incumbent will: (1) serve on project-based development teams for pathogen-specific vaccine development; (2) identify and answer specific immunological questions by developing and implementing novel analyses on samples from clinical trial volunteers; (3) liaise with other senior scientists and principal investigators (PI) within the VRC-NIAID to advance clinical candidates; and (4) liaise with philanthropic investors in vaccine-related science.

Candidates must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree and have relevant research experience. Applicants must also have a strong publication record demonstrating an ability to perform independent, high-quality, creative, and impactful research in the fields of vaccines and viral immunology. The ideal candidate will have expertise in HIV, SIV, Influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 T-cell and B-cell immunology and assay development. The incumbent should have experience in managing large research programs. The ideal candidate should also have experience in elucidation and characterization of T- and B-cell responses associated with control of replication or protection from HIV, SIV, Influenza, and SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, the ideal candidate should have experience in managing scientific projects where collaborations between private and government-funded aspects exist.

The incumbent will have access to state-of-the-art research support at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The candidate will be assigned independent resources including support personnel, equipment, space, and an allocated annual budget for services, supplies, and salaries sufficient to foster success.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full package of benefits (including retirement and health, life, and long-term care insurance) is available. Women and other groups underrepresented in biomedical research are especially encouraged to apply.

To apply for the position, interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae (CV), bibliography, and two- to three-page description of the proposed research program. Additionally, three letters of reference must be sent directly from the referees. Please include in the CV a description of mentoring and outreach activities in which you have been involved, especially those involving women and persons from other groups underrepresented in biomedical research. Please send to VRCADMIN at. Review of applications will begin on or around December 23, 2021, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
