Assistant Professor – Inflammation and Metabolic Syndrome

The Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites applications for a tenure-track, academic year position at the level of Assistant Professor. The department seeks to add additional strength to its strategic priority areas in biochemical and molecular nutrition and obesity research by hiring a highly motivated individual in the field of inflammation and metabolic syndrome. The department offers a vibrant research environment, a stellar body of graduate students, and access to world-class research core facilities through the NIH-funded Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases through Dietary Molecules. Lincoln consistently ranks among the most livable cities in the U.S. because of its outstanding schools, low crime rate, extensive bike trails, low cost of living, and vibrant restaurants and arts scene.  

Expectations are to establish an internationally recognized research program that integrates nutrition, genetics, and molecular biology approaches to mitigate inflammation and metabolic syndrome; develop collaborative research with faculty at UNL and/or other institutions; seek out interdisciplinary research projects with investigators from UNL’s Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases through Dietary Molecules and/or other programs supported by NIH NIGMS in Nebraska; establish an externally funded research program; publish research findings in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals; and present research findings annually at scientific national or international meetings, and/or through invited presentations at research institutions. 

Instruction in undergraduate and graduate programs includes a new Master’s and Ph.D. specialization in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition. Instruction includes courses in general immunology and courses with an emphasis on nutrition, inflammation and the metabolic syndrome. The successful candidate will also mentor postgraduate, graduate and/or undergraduate students and serve on graduate student committees and be available for presentations to professional organizations and the lay public.

Service includes committee assignments and other ad hoc assignments as requested by the department, college, and university, as well as membership and participation in professional societies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, nutrition or comparable degree and field.  
  • Minimum of two years of postdoctoral training. 
  • Strong record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals. 
  • Desire and ability to work cooperatively with diverse students, staff and faculty. 

  Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience. 
  • Grant writing experience. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
