This role includes oversight of GSK's targeted protein degradation platform as well as other emerging platforms. This individual will be accountable for developing an innovative and strategic vision for investment in alternative small molecule medicine modalities. The role holder will work with members in Medicine Design and other matrix partners to build an end-to-end discovery capability using alternative chemical modalities. The role holder will be responsible for building capabilities, assessing opportunity to establish partnerships with external experts/collaborators, and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the team. The Director, Modalities will lead a team of 15-20, will report to the Head of Medicinal Chemistry, and sit on the GSK Global Medicinal Chemistry Leadership Team. These responsibilities include some of the following: Develop the strategic vision for alternative small molecule medicine modalities at GSK including the protein degradation platform (PROTAC). Proactively work across organizational boundaries to drive utilization of alternative small molecule modalities at GSK. Establish partnerships with external experts/key opinion leaders as well as establish collaborations with external partner organizations. Efficiently direct the resource within their team to ensure timely delivery of laboratory objectives. Proactively identify and enable innovative technologies in the areas of alternative small molecule medicine modalities incorporating 'design-first' principles. Work with line and project team members to deliver objectives contributing ideas and fostering a culture of scientific excellence within the Department. Create and maintain high-performing teams that consistently deliver on objectives by actively managing the performance and development of staff though generation of ASMART objectives and conducting regular performance / development conversations. Set direction for their team(s) and lead with vision, integrity, clear communication, and empathy. Routinely undertake 360-degree communication to update on progress against objectives, share information on strategic initiatives and facilitate communication between peers highlighting potential issues. When appropriate, be part of scientific reviews of projects, providing scientific input and strategic recommendations into portfolio assets. Promote GSK's chemistry brand by enabling teams to publish and present their science and ensure that the IP position of their programs are secured in a timely manner. Role model good practice and be fully compliant with safety guidelines and ensure the compliance of their teams, standard operating procedures, and GSK data integrity policies. Why you?
