The department has a vibrant research community with a strong focus on the biological processes and pathological states underlying a spectrum of disease phenomena relating to cardiovascular and neurobiological systems, as well as metabolic and immune system dysfunction, cancer, and stem cell biology. One of the overreaching goals of Dr. Rabiee’s lab is to determine the underlying mechanisms of Lipedema fat resistance. Lipedema is a chronic condition that occurs almost exclusively in women and manifests as the symmetrical buildup of painful fat and swelling in the limbs, sparing the hands and feet. Different from obesity, Lipedema may be associated with reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and is often resistant to dietary or exercise-based interventions. A critical issue is the poorly understood disease biology, which for diagnosed patients results in limited treatment options that, at best, ameliorate the symptoms of lipedema. Individuals who suffer from the disease are further impacted by the absence of diagnostic tools, as well as conflicting diagnostic criteria across practitioners. A lack of public and medical awareness of Lipedema, and the stigma associated with weight, contribute to its underdiagnosis.

The successful candidate will combine the emerging high-throughput mass spectrometry-based technologies, single-cell live imaging, and state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques to investigate the underlying mechanisms of “Lipedema” fat resistance. This is an interdisciplinary project among the University of the Pacific, Stanford University School of Medicine, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center. The position will be focused on developing a Lipedema Foundation-awarded project for two years from the time of hiring. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for carrying out the project, contributing to the design of the experimental approach, presenting the project’s outcomes in international conferences, preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and help training the graduate and undergrad students in the lab. We are looking for a creative, motivated, and independent researcher with a doctoral degree and a strong background in metabolism, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Prior experience with mass spectrometry techniques is preferred but not required. Experience with mammalian cell culture techniques is highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Have obtained a Ph.D. in physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field within the past five (5) years.
  • Proficiency in English writing and communication skills.
  • All candidates with prior postdoc experiences must have at least one peer-reviewed publication as first or senior author in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training in mass spectrometry techniques (preparation of biological samples for mass spectrometry, and mass spectrometry-based data acquisition and analysis).
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Experience in metabolism and metabolic disease biology.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (basic techniques such as PCR, qPCR, and siRNA knockdown, and advanced techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9).
