What You Will Achieve

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual for a position as a Veterinary Technician Surgical Anesthetist in the Pfizer Comparative Medicine Groton Global Surgery Team. The qualified candidate will have experience with multimodal anesthesia, multi-species surgical technical support, and standard practices in veterinary care. The qualified candidate will have an Associates Degree with veterinary technician license/certification or BS in related field preferred. The qualified candidate will have pervious experience with multimodal anesthesia and surgical support. This position is in an established surgical team with scientists and surgeons developing high quality surgical models to support and advance the therapeutic portfolio.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Provide multispecies surgical technical support to include but not limited to animal handling and restraint, aseptic preparation, pre- peri- and post-operative care, observations, anesthesia, catheter placement, specialized nursing duties and assist with research procedures as necessary.
  • Understand and perform multimodal anesthesia and pain management protocols and ability to monitor, assess and make critical anesthesia related decisions efficiently and effectively during surgical procedures.
  • Ability to maintain and prepare the surgical suite to include operation and maintenance of anesthesia and surgical equipment, monitoring and proper sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies, organization and restocking of operative, surgical and related supplies.
  • Provide quality standard of veterinary care for multispecies including physical examinations, clinical care and associated appropriate clinical and veterinary documentation. Provide technical and business support for the Global Surgical group.
  • Understand and perform multimodal anesthesia and pain management protocols in rodent and non-rodent species.
  • Provide clinical care and maintain clinical records for veterinary surgical cases.
  • Ensure flawless animal care and welfare in conducting surgeries and championing the "3 Rs" principles.
  • Produce reports, posters, talks, and other project communications, and contribute to manuscripts.
  • Operate and maintain veterinary anesthesia and surgical equipment.
  • Participate in group, departmental, and Pfizer teams for improving process or other organizational endeavors.


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • Associate Degree
  • 3-4 years' experience with anesthesia and surgical support in a veterinary or laboratory animal facility


Nice-to-Have
  • 4-year degree in Biology or Veterinary related field
  • Surgical Research Anesthetist (SRA), Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician, or AALAS certification


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift, stand, walk, bend and sit
  • Ability to stand for extended duration for large animal surgery
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to make critical decisions (anesthetic related)
  • Ability to make quick and precise adjustments to anesthetic and related surgical support equipment


NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to travel ~25% to support surgery to Pfizer sites.
  • A pre-hire requirement is either providing proof of measles immunity or receiving the measles vaccination before hire.
  • In-house TB testing is completed annually.
