The Faculty of Sciences at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for up to

Four Open Topic W3 Professorships in the field of Data Science

at the newly founded Department of Data Science (DDS) within the context of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria. The professorships are full-time and permanent positions to be filled by the earliest possible starting date.

We seek to appoint leading experts (including early career scientists) with internationally visible research and teaching profiles in the mathematical aspects of data science, for example, statistical modelling, mathematical foundations of machine learning, modern algorithms for data science, numerical analysis, harmonic analysis, mathematical analysis of large data sets, mathematics of edge computing, information geometry, or statistical manifolds. The successful candidates’ research activities should complement existing research groups at FAU, particularly in the context of data science. The professors will be expected to contribute to the development of the Department. The professors will also be expected to teach students in the new Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Data Science and participate in other degree programmes offered by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Data Science, as well as offer academic events for students in other disciplines. The Department of Data Science (DDS) is in its initial phase and offers a dynamic, collaborative structure for research into the fundamentals of data science with agile teams focusing on future-oriented, interdisciplinary research topics.

Successful candidates show an excellent academic track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards. You have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are desired. The positions also require additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. You may also have acquired these necessary qualifications in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as W1 Professor or Assistant Professor).

FAU expects applicants to demonstrate academic leadership, engage in early career development, and to drive FAU’s strategic agenda. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.

FAU offers an outstandingly productive research environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly community within a vibrant institutional network.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and is also responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

Please submit your complete application documents (CV, list of publications, list of lectures and courses taught, research and teaching statement, copies of certificates and degrees, list of third-party funding) online at https://berufungen.fau.de by 15 November 2021, addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences.
