NIH funded post-doctoral position available in the Johnson laboratory at Oregon Health & Science University, School of Medicine. https://www.ohsu.edu/people/david-c-johnson-phd.  Our laboratory works on two different herpesviruses; human cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus (HSV). The current position is to study interactions between HSV and neurons. HSV is the major infectious cause of blindness in the US because the virus reactivates in sensory ganglia, returns in axons to the cornea, and causes scarring of the cornea. Our laboratory has been funded by the National Eye Institute for ~22 years.  We have been at the forefront of studies aimed at understanding how HSV and other herpesviruses are transported by kinesin motors on microtubules in neuronal axons.  We described the specific kinesins involved in this transport and characterized the form of viral particles that are transported in different neurons.  Recent unpublished studies are focused on the viral proteins that tether HSV particles onto the kinesin motors.  We have very exciting results involving transfected neurons where specific viral proteins transfected into neurons are transported specifically into axons but not dendrites and studies involving BioID-conjugated kinesins that biotinylate specific viral proteins.  We anticipate that we can define a more detailed molecular model of how HSV and varicella zoster virus move in the nervous system.

The candidate must have solid experience with molecular biology: characterizing proteins using polyacrylamide gels and western blots, manipulating plasmid DNAs, cell culture and transfection of cells.  Experience with neuronal cell culture and transfection, confocal microscopy and virology, especially herpesviruses and baculoviruses, will be a major advantage. The candidate can expect to get first author papers and will get experience with writing scientific papers and grant proposals.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. degree with a strong publication record. Applicants should submit a CV and a statement of no more than 1 page of research interests and future career plans. Three letters of recommendation will be required after a preliminary screening process.

Please, electronically submit your application as a single PDF file to johnsoda77@gmail.com and do not reply to the PI’s university address.
