Job Description

The laboratory of Dr. Scott Earley (Google Scholar Profile: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=lR-xaZcAAAAJ&hl=en) is seeking highly-motivated individuals to fill two NIH-funded postdoctoral positions. These projects are funded by a new collaborative R33 award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) is second only to Alzheimer’s disease as a cause of dementia and accounts for ~15-30% of all dementia cases. Cerebral small vessel diseases (cSVDs) are a group of pathologies afflicting the microcirculation of the brain that collectively account for up to 20% of all strokes and are the most common pathology underlying VCID. The pathogeneses of cSVDs are incompletely understood, representing a significant barrier in developing strategies for prevention and treatment. We seek to address this need. Successful candidates will join a team of experts integrating unique genetic resources, vascular pressure myography, patch-clamp electrophysiology, high-resolution Ca2+ imaging, superresolution microscopy, specialized magnetic resonance imaging modalities, and learning and memory behavior assays to develop and characterize multiple novel genetic models of cSVDs and VCID that are based on genes contributing to disease in humans. Our long-term objective is to create and employ genetic models that faithfully recapitulate important hallmarks of human cSVDs and VCID.

Successful candidates will perform experiments, collect and analyze data, manage projects, train and supervise students, publish papers, and assist with preparing and submitting grants.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in pharmacology or related field obtained within 5 years from start date, relevant laboratory experiences, and a sincere passion for research are required.

Applicable but not required, skills include patch-clamp electrophysiology, Ca2+ imaging, multiphoton, lattice lightsheet, and/or superresolution microscopy, pressure myography, laser Doppler flowmetry, single-cell genomics, small animal surgery, and experience with transgenic mice.

Compensation Grade

Postdoctoral Scholar
