Manager/Senior Manager, Patient Access to Care

Northern/North Midlands

Gilead Sciences, Inc. is a research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercialises innovative medicines in areas of unmet medical need. With each new discovery and investigational drug candidate, we seek to improve the care of patients living with life-threatening diseases around the world. Gilead's therapeutic areas of focus include HIV/AIDS, liver diseases, cancer and inflammation, and serious respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Most recent estimates suggest that around 89,000 people in England are living with chronic Hepatitis C infection (HCV). HCV is a curable infection and the UK Government has committed to eliminating the disease ahead of the WHO ambition of 2030. In the UK, injecting drug use continues to be the single largest risk factor for HCV infection, so testing is increasingly being undertaken in settings where those individuals are likely to be, such as in Addiction services, community pharmacies, homeless shelters, prisons and other healthcare settings.

To support HCV Elimination, NHSE have worked with Pharmaceutical companies to establish an Elimination framework' whereby NHSE procures both medicines and Elimination initiatives. Gilead was awarded Gold status in that framework and since May 2019 has been working with partners to support HCV elimination. https://www.england.nhs.uk/2019/04/nhs-england-strikes-world-leading-deal-to-help-eliminate-hepatitis-c/ opens new window" target="_blank" href="https://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=2552573&targetURL=https://www.england.nhs.uk/2019/04/nhs-england-strikes-world-leading-deal-to-help-eliminate-hepatitis-c/">https://www.england.nhs.uk/2019/04/nhs-england-strikes-world-leading-deal-to-help-eliminate-hepatitis-c/

The Patient Access to Care team is non-promotional, field-based team that leads Gilead's Elimination initiatives within Addiction services. Gilead has established partnerships with the majority of providers of Addiction services and our collective aim is to ensure that every at-risk' service-user is tested and to ensure the referral and treatment pathway is as streamlined to be as simple and effective as possible. To drive change from within the Addiction services, our funding enables the employment of HCV coordinators and data analysts. NHSE has also established Operational Delivery Networks (ODNs) to lead the NHS' patient finding efforts and optimise treatment outcomes at a local level. But there is significant local variation in these services due to the patchwork quilt' of different commissioning authorities and providers involved.

As a PAC manager your role is to develop and deliver the patient finding strategy for Addiction services within your region, by working closely with the HCV coordinators, Operational Delivery Networks and other key stakeholders. You'll be supported by a cross-functional field team comprising Therapeutic Specialists, Regional Market Access and our Medical scientists.

You'll be joining a team that has been awarded Best Pharmaceutical Partnership with the NHS in 2019' and Best Overall Partnership with the NHS in 2019' by the Health Service Journal as well as Gilead's Excel Award for the Best Field team in UK&I (non-sales) in Jan 2020.

You'll thrive in this role if:
  • you enjoy working with and leading through ambiguity
  • you understand your environment and stakeholders well enough to be able to seize opportunities when the picture changes
  • you can bring the right people together, set a collective ambition and work with a range of different stakeholders to achieve it
  • you are driven by the mission and can inspire others to act

These roles are a unique opportunity; to contribute towards England being the first major country in the world to eliminate this virus; to work with the NHS and charities to drive change from within the system; and to join a company with a heritage and ongoing commitment to antivirals.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver cross-functional PAC strategy for your region with external and internal stakeholders to achieve target of number of patients commencing DAA treatment
  • Manage performance by working with ODNs, HCV coordinators and the xKAM team to ensure collective actions and milestones are delivered and course correct as required
  • Identify opportunities to go-faster' and then build supporting business case for investment
  • Champion elimination, represent Gilead and inspire a range of stakeholders to change behavior, ranging from those working within Addiction services, within the NHS, public health or government officials
  • Lead/support on national initiatives designed to improve our patient finding capability e.g. awareness programmes, educational and training materials, piloting innovative pathways
  • Ensure clear focus on compliance with industry regulations, legal requirements and internal business conduct policies in this sensitive and potentially complex area.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • Proven success working within a performance-driven environment
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity and lead others through it
  • Experience in re-designing services with the NHS coupled with excellent project management skills
  • Cross-functional leadership - ability to mobilise others and maximize their contribution to deliver the strategy
  • Excellent external stakeholder management - create productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders being viewed as a valued partner.
  • Strong understanding of industry code of conduct and key relevant legislation.
  • Articulate and compelling communicator
  • Experience working within the drug service environment and/or working in hepatitis C is preferable but not essential

Gilead Core Values
  • Integrity (always doing the right thing),
  • Teamwork (collaborating in good faith),
  • Excellence (working at a high level of commitment and capability)
  • Accountability (taking personal responsibility).
  • Inclusion
