We are seeking talented and diverse applicants for this leadership opportunity. Biomedical Sciences supports the mission of the Duluth Campus and Medical School with strengths in neuroscience, multidisciplinary research, and health disparities in rural and Native American communities. The BMS Department Head will have the opportunity to execute new efforts to achieve greater excellence in areas of emphasis, including neuroscience. The Department Head will work with other Medical School leaders to fulfill campus specific missions: to serve the health care needs of rural Minnesota and Native American communities; contribute to the high standards of the University of Minnesota in discovering and disseminating knowledge through research; and educating physicians with an emphasis on family medicine.

As the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus approaches its 50th year of existence, the BMS Department is committed to fostering excellence in research and the advancement of learning and knowledge through scholarship, delivering the basic science curriculum for medical students, and participating in graduate and undergraduate education through multiple mechanisms. The 26 faculty in Biomedical Sciences represent training in the complete spectrum of medical disciplines ranging from molecular biology and biochemistry to microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology. The department plays a key role in community engagement in science education across Northern Minnesota. Research laboratories, animal facilities, and administrative support are available on campus.

Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in a biomedical sciences field, be eligible for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure, and a record of sustained national research funding with a current active research program. Candidates will also have successful leadership experience in an academic setting, commitment to the Duluth campus’ unique missions and demonstrated experience and interest aligned with our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The complete job description and how to apply can be found at https://z.umn.edu/BMSHead.

Review of applications will begin by late Fall and the position will remain open until filled.
