Expressions of interest for appointment to a professorship as part of the Excellence Strategy - Universities of Excellence funding line at Universität Hamburg

Universität Hamburg was successful in its application for the second funding line of the Universities of Excellence competition. The proposal included a series of new professorships, which should be appointed as part of an extraordinary academic search procedure conducted in accordance with Section 14 subsection 6 number 4 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). Extraordinary appointments may be made at the discretion of the Executive University Board, which acts as both selection and appointment committee.
Of the professorships, 3 W2 open-topic professorships are available to reinforce the University’s profile initiatives.
Profile initiatives are interdisciplinary research groups at the University. The professorships are systematic building blocks in the development and expansion of profile initiatives, which make up the first of 3 levels of research alliance at Universität Hamburg, followed by emerging fields and core research areas, which also contain the University’s 4 clusters of excellence. The Executive University Board has selected 3 profile initiatives as successful in their application for a professorship:
- Violence and Security
- Marketing and Communication
- Mechanisms of Change
Professors are not bound to any particular subject (open topic), but are selected on the basis of their potential contribution to fulfilling the goals of a profile initiative. Thus this call for applications goes out to all researchers to express interest in this type of professorship if they wish to work at Universität Hamburg in any of the 3 profile initiatives named above. In consultation with each profile initiative, the Executive University Board will identify one person to be offered an extraordinary appointment to one of three professorships. The appropriate department and faculty to house this professorship will be determined only after the individual has been chosen.
The Executive University Board will consider all expressions of interest and invite all applicants to an interview.

Individuals should signal their interest by sending their curriculum vitae, suitable supporting documents, and a maximum of 3 pages detailing the reasons why they are suited to the role.
The University intends to appoint all 3 professors in the remainder of 2022, where possible, despite the time restrictions arising as a result of the pandemic, in order to pursue the work of developing the Excellence Strategy. Interested individuals should therefore be available to commence their duties in the near future.
