Research Fellow in Mathematical and Physical Biology

Full Time, Fixed Term
Salary: The salary range will be £36,770 – £44,388 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
London Centre for Nanotechnology
London
The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7.

This is a full time Research position for two years (with a potential of an extension for an additional year) funded by The Crick Institute. The position is related to a project that explores the role of growth and patterning in development and evolution. The successful candidate will address the interplay between tissue patterning and cell growth using tools from mathematics and physics such as dynamical systems and scaling laws. We will combine analytical and numerical tools to develop a theoretical framework for the evolution of size, shape and morphology.

The theoretical tools and analysis developed will be rooted in and motivated by experimental observations in the groups of collaborators and beyond. The research will be carried out in Dr Zena Hadjivasiliou’s group that is affiliated with The London Centre for Nanotechnology, the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL and The Crick Institute. The project will involve interactions with experimental groups at The Crick and UCL. The precise details of the project aims and direction are flexible and will be drawn by the successful applicant together with the PI (Dr Hadjivasiliou).

Applicants should have a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related discipline in the Physical Sciences. No prior knowledge of biology is required but willingness to work at the interface of physics/maths and biology is essential. Coding competency (in C, Python, Matlab or similar language) is essential. Applicants should demonstrate a publication record appropriate to their level of experience. The successful candidate will be self-driven, independent and able to work as a member of a team.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, points 26 (salary £32,217 - £33,958 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
