Sr. Scientist, in vivo Biology
Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Oct 5 2021 We are seeking a scientist with experience in metabolism, cardiovascular, renal, and/or neuroscience research either in academia or industry. This biologist will join an energetic team in the GSK Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) with the goal of discovering and developing medicines for diseases with a significant unmet medical need. In this position the laboratory-based scientist will conduct integrative pharmacology experiments that drive the discovery of medicines. The scientists will support preclinical efforts for target validation/lead optimization and may also support clinical programs. This is an exciting bench-based role in a dynamic matrix team environment that will allow the successful candidate to have a critical contribution in our drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will have knowledge, understanding and experience in state of the art metabolism, cardiovascular, renal, and/or neuroscience in vivo models. Only a talented individual, who aspires to learn and work collaboratively in teams will succeed in this role. Though drug discovery experience is highly desirable, this is not essential. The successful candidate will be one who is science driven, innovative, understands project needs and establishes relevant biological assays, effectively trouble shoots challenges, assumes personal accountability, and is courageous. The candidate must be keen to learn through experience, in order to advance in their career. This role will provide you with the opportunity to lead key activities to progress your career. The responsibilities of this role include the following: Deliver pharmacology experiments in rodents to support drug discovery programs across multiple therapeutic areas (metabolism, cardiovascular, renal, neurodegeneration). Able to design, establish, conduct, and validate in vivo assays. Experience in methods to measure metabolism, cardiovascular/renal function, and/or behavior. Experience in generating, recording, analyzing, and presenting data. Skills in interpreting results and drawing conclusions through independent working and with supervision. Able to resolve scientific and technical challenges and deliver results efficiently. Maintain knowledge of relevant literature and effectively incorporate knowledge. Assimilate and evaluate in-house and publicly available data in support of projects. Effective communication (both verbal and written) of scientific ideas and results to internal groups and project teams. Ability to work independently as well as in a matrix environment. About NHG RU: The Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) was formed in 2019 to identify and advance novel targets with high genetic association to disease. This is based on the observation that targets with high human genetic evidence supporting their causal role in a disease state improves success in drug discovery by two-fold. The NHG RU is therapeutically broad and complements other research units within GSK which have strategic focuses on immunology and oncology. The current portfolio includes projects focused on cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases including heart failure and liver disease in addition to neurological diseases including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, FTD, migraine and pain. The remit of NHG RU is to identify novel targets based on human genetics, develop assets for clinical studies, and perform Phase 1 first-time in human and proof of mechanism studies in the clinic. This goal is enabled through strategic external and GSK-internal partnerships. Why you? Basic Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in biology, physiology, pharmacology, or related area 2 years of in vivo research experience either in industry or an academic environment Experience in rodent handling and use in experimentation, dosing, formulation, tissue harvest, and blood sampling. Exposure to a range of in vivo biology techniques including those for the measurement of metabolism, cardiovascular function, renal function, inflammation, and/or neurodegneration Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and maintaining laboratory notebooks Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in establishing robust rodent PK/PD and efficacy models Proficiency in models of cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and/or neurodegenerative disease. Surgical skills in recovery and non-recovery rodents Knowledge of in vitro cell model systems (cell lines, primary cells, iPSCs) and techniques (molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry) Ability to prioritize, manage time efficiently, and implement creative solutions to meet program needs. Proficiency in GraphPad Prism Commitment to continual improvement by reading and applying the latest scientific literature, methodologies and technologies. Resourceful, takes initiative, adept, versatile, and resilient. Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Prior experience in drug discovery either at pharma or in biotech. Why GSK?
