The Department of Biochemistry in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (http://mcb.illinois.edu/) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks outstanding applicants for a full-time tenured Associate Professor or Full Professor position with a focus on the research areas of biophysics and structural biology. We place particular emphasis on candidates whose research integrates methods in cryo-electron microscopy. UIUC has recently purchased a Titan Glacios for in house data collection and is part of the PI3L Consortium that allows access to a Titan Krios located within a short driving distance.

The Department of Biochemistry seeks to strengthen its efforts in the areas of, but not limited to:  biochemistry, biophysics, membrane protein structure and function, nucleic acid biochemistry and contemporary structural biochemistry. The successful candidate would also provide synergy with major campus research thrusts, particularly in cancer, neurobiology, immunology, cardiovascular biology, mechanistic biochemistry, imaging, RNA biology and plant biology. The UIUC campus offers a wide range of state-of-the-art research support facilities that include the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center, the W. M. Keck Center for Comparative and Functional Genomics, as well as facilities for X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy and microelectron diffraction, NMR, EPR, proteomics, metabolomics, high-throughput small molecule screening, flow cytometry and sorting, next generation sequencing and single-cell genomics, multi-model biomedical imaging (super-resolution microscopy, in vitro and in vivo imaging, including the 9.4 T MRI for small animals), tumor engineering and phenotyping, and generation of transgenic mice. The campus has strong programs in biophysics, bioengineering, chemistry and multiple student training grants.  It also offers collaborative initiatives that include the Cancer Center at Illinois, the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. Superb computational resources are available at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D or equivalent degree in biochemistry or closely related field, and have an excellent track record of research creativity and productivity. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a robustly funded independent research program, participate in our undergraduate and Ph.D. programs, and teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position offers excellent laboratory facilities, relocation start-up funds, and the opportunity to work with outstanding colleagues and graduate students. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.  Proposed start date is Aug 16, 2022.
