Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Assistant Professor Position
Position Description: The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine invites applications for one or more tenure-track appointments at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates that bring innovative approaches to studying fundamental problems related to the Department's key focus areas (https://hsc.unm.edu/medicine/departments/biochemistry/research/) are encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, metabolism and metabolism related diseases such as GI diseases, cancer, aging, obesity and type 2 diabetes. The scientific excellence of the candidates is more important than the specific area of research. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to establish a dynamic research program and aggressively pursue extramural funding. In addition, candidates will need to excel at undergraduate, graduate and medical school-level teaching while contributing to student success through inclusive mentoring and by participating in activities that promote equity and inclusion. Using innovative and modern pedagogy, candidates will be expected to progressively contribute to the Department's teaching mission that incorporates both classroom and laboratory training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students.
Minimum Requirements: 1) Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in biomedical sciences, 2) three years post-doctoral experience, 3) peer-reviewed research publications in the past three years, 4) teaching or mentoring experience, and 5) must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications: Metabolic disease-related peer-reviewed publications, research activities complementing those of the department or the School of Medicine, a demonstrated ability to secure extramural grant support, and potential to contribute to the department teaching missions. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is located on the UNM Health Sciences Campus, which includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, and College of Population Health. The School of Medicine delivers high-quality comprehensive patient care and education and cutting-edge biomedical science to the people of New Mexico and beyond. There are over 1200 faculty members at the UNM School of Medicine contributing to UNM's rich and diverse research environment. The UNM Health Sciences Center is the State's principal biomedical research center and offers state-of-the-art core facilities. The UNM Health Sciences Center includes a Clinical and Translational Science Center, an NCI designated Cancer Center, Centers of Basic Research Excellence (CoBRE) for Autophagy, Inflammation and Metabolism (AIM) and for Metals in Biology and Medicine (CMBM), Center for Molecular Discovery, and other centers and programs (https://hsc.unm.edu/research/centers-programs). These Centers provide infrastructure and productively serve as an intellectual hub for the study of metabolic diseases.
