Research Focused Faculty – Medical Informatics, Data Science

The University of Chicago: Biological Sciences Division: Department of Medicine

Position Description

The University of Chicago is recruiting tenured or tenure track faculty at any rank, whose research focuses on improving health outcomes using data science.  Areas of interest include but are not limited to biomedical and health informatics, biomedical data science, AI in medicine, data integration, pharmacogenomics, and personalized health.  The University recognizes the essential contributions that data, information, and computer sciences make in the understanding of biology, medicine and the enhanced delivery of health care services.  Our intent is to recruit a cohort of researchers who will interact successfully with computational biologists, statisticians, computer scientists, geneticists, and clinicians throughout the University of Chicago.

Divisional and Departmental appointments will be made depending on the training and scholarly interest of the faculty appointees.  For example, in the Biological Science Division, faculty appointment could be in departments such as the Department of Medicine or the Department of Human Genetics. In the Physical Sciences Division, faculty appointment could be in departments such as the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Statistics.  Appointments in the PSD will be made in conjunction with the UChicago Data Science Initiative (DSI).  The DSI, which is a collaboration among the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Statistics and other units on campus, is a new program encompassing research, education and outreach in data science including academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, cross-disciplinary research programs, and novel partnerships with industry, social impact organizations and government.

The University is an exciting center of scientific discovery and innovation, and opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and participation as graduate student trainers abound. Most university divisions and centers, including the Biological Sciences Division, University of Chicago Medical Center, Physical and Social Sciences Divisions, and Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, are contained within one compact campus in Chicago’s vibrant Hyde Park neighborhood, where many faculty and students live. Competitive research space and start-up funding will be available, as will the potential for interactions with our off-campus affiliates, Argonne National Laboratory and the Marine Biological Laboratory.  The University of Chicago recruits outstanding doctoral students and has state-of-the-art research facilities.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must:  1) have a doctoral degree (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD) or equivalent, and 2) qualify for a tenured or tenure track faculty appointment.

To be considered, those interested must apply through the University of Chicago’s Academic Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications:  http://apply.interfolio.com/95788.  Applicants must upload: a cover letter, a CV including bibliography, and a combined research and teaching statement [which may also include the candidate’s experience in teaching diverse students, if applicable (The University’s Diversity Statement can be found at https://provost.uchicago.edu/statements-diversity)]. We will consider group applications if each member applies; please indicate this in the cover letter.  Review of complete applications will begin no earlier than December 1, 2021 and repeat at least quarterly thereafter throughout 2022.
