Postdoctoral Fellow in Protein Engineering, Antibody Discovery, Immune Engineering, and Chemical Biology - Xin Zhou Lab

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Dr. Xin Zhou of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School is looking for 2-3 exceptional Post-doctoral Fellows for her research group (https://zhou-lab.org/). This is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral candidates interested in protein engineering, antibody discovery, immune engineering, and chemical biology to work on the newest ideas in the fields.

As a newly established team, the Zhou lab is keen on cultivating a positive, caring, and inclusive laboratory environment, and focuses our time on training and supporting a new generation of scientists.

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in life changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care. We are united in our mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS and related diseases. We strive to create an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment where we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all backgrounds, and design programs to promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations. We conduct groundbreaking research that advances treatment, we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers, and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

Requirements

Studies in Dr. Zhou’s lab are aimed at engineering synthetic proteins designed to target immunity both outside and inside of cells, with the ultimate goal of reversing diseases. We build switchable antibodies/cytokines that can intelligently detect endogenous and exogenous signals, reprogram signaling cascades in immune cells to enhance cell therapy, and develop new tools for precise detection and manipulation of cellular activities. We combine concepts from chemistry, biophysics, and synthetic biology, to develop next-generation molecular biotechnologies, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Postdoctoral positions are available in the lab for curious and open-minded scientists to study the following four areas of interest:

  1. Evolution and design of novel protein sensors and switches.
  2. Reprogramming signaling pathways in the immune cells to enhance cell therapy.
  3. New strategies for protein pharmacological modulation.
  4. Molecular recognition and modulation of protein post-translational modification.

We have state-of-the-art facilities and a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment in Dana-Farber’s Longwood Center. We are part of the Cancer Biology/Chemical Biology program at Dana-Farber and Postdoctoral Fellows are concurrently appointed as Research Fellows in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School.  We collaborate with disease-focused scientists and biotherapeutics scientists in both industry and academia to pursue new therapeutic approaches addressing human disease conditions.

Qualifications

Postdoctoral fellows in the lab bring or learn diverse tools, including:

  • Molecular cloning, cell culture, protein expression.
  • Biophysical characterization: binding measurement, structural analysis.
  • Protein evolution: Phage display, yeast display, protein library construction.
  • Immune cell (CAR-T, NK, etc.) engineering and characterization.
  • Fluorescence microscopy.
  • Cell-based phenotypic screen.

A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in chemistry, bioengineering, biophysics, biology, or related field by the start date is required.

Candidates are invited to send Dr. Xin Zhou (xin_zhou1@dfci.harvard.edu) a CV, a cover letter describing past research experiences and future research interests, and contact information of three references (preferably as a single PDF). We also welcome informal inquiries.

At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we work every day to create an innovative, caring, and inclusive environment where every patient, family, and staff member feels they belong.  As relentless as we are in our mission to reduce the burden of cancer for all, we are equally committed to diversifying our faculty and staff.  Cancer knows no boundaries and when it comes to hiring the most dedicated and diverse professionals, neither do we. If working in this kind of organization inspires you, we encourage you to apply.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is an equal opportunity employer and affirms the right of every qualified applicant to receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, national origin, sexual orientation, genetic information, disability, age, ancestry, military service, protected veteran status, or other groups as protected by law.
