Photon research is one of the areas of specialization for the Department of Physics at Universität Hamburg and is furthered through the Cluster of Excellence Center for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI): Advanced Imaging of Matter, Collaborative Research Center 925: Light-Induced Dynamics and Control of Correlated Quantum Systems, and two exceptional research centers, the Center for Optical Quantum Technologies (ZOQ) and the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). X-ray physics plays a particularly significant role in these fields. The research campus at Bahrenfeld features very close collaboration between DESY and Universität Hamburg and its institutes, offering an exceptional research environment with an internationally unique combination of the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III; FLASH, the first free-electron laser for soft radiation; and, especially, the European XFEL with its ultrashort X-ray flashes of outstanding spatial coherence and spectral brilliance.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a person with an excellent international reputation in the field of pulsed radiation to teach and conduct research in the field of experimental physics. The successful candidate has a research focus on X-ray spectroscopy with X-ray free-electron lasers and their application in the research of materials, solid-state physics, nanosciences, and chemistry or life sciences. The successful candidate is further expected to participate actively in the instruction of students at undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes giving lectures, practical courses, and seminars, and supervising final theses for the degree programs offered by the Department of Physics.

The successful candidate is further expected to actively participate in the Cluster of Excellence CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Additional Criteria

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.
