Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Neuroscience

Virginia Tech (VT) invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the School of Neuroscience at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking a candidate that will apply innovative approaches to computational, cellular, molecular or systems neuroscience that will complement the expertise of the 18 primary faculty members who have joined the School of Neuroscience since 2015 (http://www.neuroscience.vt.edu). Successful candidates will establish a competitive research program that can attract extramural funding from a wide variety of funding agencies. Competitive salary, space, and start‐ up packages will be provided.

Virginia Tech has become a destination university for the nation’s best students interested in Neuroscience. The School of Neuroscience offers a unique interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum, that includes four distinct majors: Clinical Neuroscience, Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, Computational and Systems Neuroscience, and Experimental Neuroscience. Following a “Hands‐on, Minds‐on” philosophy, Virginia Tech undergraduates engage in scholarly research and discovery activities as part of their training. In addition to housing ~800 undergraduate majors, the School of Neuroscience also recently launched a Neuroscience Ph.D. program. Prospective faculty members must show an interest in teaching undergraduates and graduate students, be prepared to develop innovative courses, and include these trainees as a component of their research program.

Required Qualifications

All applicants must have earned a doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., MD/Ph.D., DVM) in a relevant discipline with post‐doctoral experience at the time of appointment. We are specifically interested in applicants whose research program will include computational approaches to understand the function, circuits, development, or cellular and molecular diversity of the nervous system. Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in neuroscience‐related research as evidenced by:

  • Peer‐reviewed publications and prior funding through individual federal or foundation support;
  • A vision to establish an independent research program with a high likelihood of competitive extramural grant support;
  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research;
  • Vision, creativity, and leadership skills;
  • A willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries;
  • A true desire to advise and teach a student body that is diverse with respect to socio‐economic status, interests, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to candidates with research programs that integrate and complement existing research programs in the School of Neuroscience and relate to programmatic needs of our undergraduate and graduate curricula. Existing grant support, while a good indicator for future funding potential, is not required.

The School of Neuroscience feels strongly that inclusion, equity, and diversity are values that we promote and hold in the highest regard. To be successful, faculty must not only excel in the domains of scholarship, education, and service, but are expected to contribute to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the School, University, and/or community. The School of Neuroscience therefore seeks candidates that share these important values and embrace diversity and inclusion in the broadest sense

Applications must be submitted online at http://www.jobs.vt.edu/ (Posting # 517295) and should include a cover letter describing their interest in the department, curriculum vitae, at least three references, a 3‐page research statement, a 1‐page teaching statement describing an integrated vision for Neuroscience education, and a diversity statement. Review of applications is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled.
