ROLE SUMMARY

Develop and deliver chemical, engineering, analytical or microbiological process technology in support of commercial Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing. Performs production troubleshooting, support and improvement. Serve as the primary technical expert for the manufacturing methods, perform or direct scientific laboratory studies, and make recommendations to improve manufacturing reliability, cost, safety, compliance and environmental performance. Support the introduction of new processes into the facility, and support in-sourcing and out-sourcing projects for supply chain optimization. Work closely with the manufacturing plant, review procedures, review process performance data, and solve process problems. Provide technical knowledge, expertise and evaluation for other support functions.

Conducts exploratory research to produce new knowledge and potential products; conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase productivity. Develops research proposals to provide a technically and economically sound basis for developing and evaluating new or improved chemistry, equipment, processes, and analytical and physical testing techniques. Reports progress of research work and significance of the results. Recommends utilization of the results or changes in the scope of work or termination of projects. May be asked to lead technical or project teams.

Functional/Technical Knowledge: Applies extensive technical and industry-specific and non-specific expertise and has full knowledge of the requirements of other related disciplines (technical, Regulatory, QO, Project Management, etc). Demonstrated skills in leading, planning, and developing a successful business operation. Recognized internal and external to their business unit as an expert and consultant.

Problem Solving and Innovation: Develops solutions to multi-faceted, cross-organizational, complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity, innovation, and creativity. Ability to gather, analyze and interpret, relate and compare information from multiple sources and identify cause and effect relationships. Conceives and initiates new projects within the context of unit and operational goals. Able to adapt and respond positively to a variety of situations and people in order to meet changing work unit priorities.

Discretion, Latitude, Level of Independence: Work is performed without formal direction while keeping Management informed of goals and progress. Objectives and work assignments are individually determined and self-started. Exercises significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment and suggests extensions or new projects both within and outside of the immediate unit, often driving the dialogue and owning the implementation.

Impact and Organizational Contribution: Decisions impact the achievement of objectives and the reputation of the department, and actions help to set the reputation of the department. Recommends, evaluates and applies new technologies. Develops information which extends knowledge in a given field. Progresses multiple projects of increasing technical complexity in parallel and in a timely fashion, achieving results through others. Workload will increase via volume and/or technical complexity of assignments and delivery to commitments. Monitors and manages the efforts of colleagues to achieve delivery of short-term to mid-term goals. Leads and motivates others, generating commitment and a shared sense of purpose. Enables others to contribute their best. Acts as technical mentor who engages talent to meet objectives.

Teamwork/Influence: Can serve as organizational spokesperson for projects. Acts as an advisor to management, offering recommendations and assessments, and often owning drive for decisions and implementation. Interacts regularly and effectively with senior internal and external personnel, making appropriate recommendations and understanding the impact to the organization. Conducts briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives. Actively involved in daily operations. Frequently accomplish results through subordinate colleagues. Experienced in colleague relation issues and in teaming.

Time Span of Work: Projects and tasks cover mid to long term deliverables, often across multiple years. Work is measured by completion of milestones.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must-Have

  • BS/BA in related field and 14+ years of synthetic organic chemistry lab work; MS/MA in related field and 12+ years of synthetic organic chemistry lab work; or PhD in synthetic organic chemistry and 9+ years of synthetic organic chemistry lab work.


Nice-to-Have
  • Experience in supporting scale-up and technology transfer to pilot or commercial scale facilities
  • Significant experience in process change control and chemical process incident resolution


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The position involves working in a laboratory/production environment, which may include standing for long periods of time and working with chemicals.

The position requires the ability to perform mathematical calculations including complex data analysis.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

The position may require colleagues to work off-hours, weekends and/or holidays to meet business or customer needs.

The position may involve some travel to support other sites.
