Executive Director, Translational Immunology


Genentech is seeking an Executive Director to lead the Translational Immunology Department. The Department’s activities are critical pillars of target and biomarker discovery and validation, and NME development for all programs in Immunology, Infectious Diseases, and Ophthalmology.

The Department is responsible for:

  • Development of new in vivo models of fibrotic, autoimmune, inflammatory, ophthalmologic, and infectious diseases that reproduce significant aspects of human pathophysiology, as reflected, in part, by response to human standard of care therapeutics or their surrogates.
  • Target and biomarker discovery and validation
  • Generation of novel assays in preclinical species to ascertain and understand PKPD relationships of specific new molecular entities (NME), for performance of efficacy experiments with NMEs in appropriate models, and for developing data for dose predictions for human trials.  

The Department Head:

  • Is responsible for strategic, tactical, and technical alignment with discovery laboratories in the Departments of Immunology Discovery, Infectious Diseases, and Neurology, as well as with bioinformaticians, chemists, clinicians, protein engineers, and other scientists involved in data analysis and NME development
  • Accountable for Translational Immunology representation on all NME teams
  • Organizes, oversees, and prosecutes these in vivo activities through 5 different groups, encompassing 32 employees and contractors, each overseen by a Scientific Manager
  • Represents the TI interface with the Vice Presidents of Immunology Discovery, Infectious Diseases and Neuroscience (for ophthalmology)
  • Collaborates with the heads of Translational Oncology and Translational Neurology on issues related to in vivo pre-clinical modeling
  • Serves on the Translational Science Leadership Team to identify common issues facing gRED Research
  • Lead a robust basic science discovery program in one of the scientific areas of importance to Translational Immunology
  • Reports to Vice President, Immunology and Infectious Diseases


  • MD, PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent with in depth training in a relevant field, and deep understanding of biological pathways relevant to fibrosis, inflammation, retinal diseases, infection, microbiome, and host defense. At least 10 years scientific experience including relevant animal models, and evidence of exceptional productivity, manifest by publications in high quality journals and invitations to speak at national and international meetings. Evidence of successful management of laboratory groups and of complex and interactive projects.
