ROLE SUMMARY

We are seeking an oustanding computational biologist to join a team of ~50 scientists within the Primary Pharmacology Group (PPG) at our Groton, CT campus supporting hit identification and lead optimization for the small molecule portfolio in Worldwide Research & Development. Working collaboratively across the Medicine Design organization and with Research Unit project teams, the ideal candidate will autonomously provide and interpret computational algorithms and statistical models to address a range of drug discovery challenges, particularly in the areas of disease models and pharmacological response characterization, phenotypic screening, mechanism of action elucidation, drug repurposing, and discovery of novel targeting mechanisms, including RNA targeting. They will be excited by the design of experiments for small molecule and functional genomic library screening, the analysis of subsequent data and the design of follow-up screening experiments. Work will include the development of methods to analyze multi-parametric assay results and the integration and interpretation of complex data sets (derived from both internal and external sources), for example from high content screening, literature and pathway mining to elucidate mechanism of action and for hypothesis generation. This scientist will provide scientific domain knowledge in bioinformatics, computational biology and data science and will demonstrate the ability to rapidly develop, evaluate and implement new techniques.

The successful candidate will be expected to identify and manage external collaborations. They will have the ability to propose and lead internal projects and will serve as a "cross site/unit" resource within the computational biology community.

The successful candidate will also be excited by working in fast-paced teams with talented scientists from other disciplines (e.g. Chemistry, Research Unit Biology, and Computational Sciences). They should therefore possess strong collaborative and written/verbal communication skills and be adept at building partnerships. Key to the role is an ability to work independently and propose creative approaches for complex technical and biological questions. As such, in addition to technical skills, the candidate should demonstrate a personal drive, leadership skills, flexibility/resiliency, and a good sense of humor.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

*Deliver computational biology support to drive the Primary Pharmacology Group portfolio including projects supporting Cardiovascular & Metabolic disease, Inflammation and Immunology, Rare Diseases and Oncology

*Selection of chemical and genomic libraries for screening campaigns

*Analysis of phenotypic screening results, mining of compound annotations and design of follow-up experiments

*Analysis of image-based, multiparametric datasets (eg cell painting) for hit prioritization and hypothesis generation

*Analysis and integration of high-dimensional multi-omics datasets (proteomics, genomics pathways) to derive testable hypothesis to assist phenotypic deconvolution, mechanism of action elucidation, lead compound selection and characterization

* Work closely with primary pharmacology, hit discovery, computational science and chemical biology groups to develop tools supporting research strategy (eg novel target types or modalities, DNA-Encoded Library screening, Cell Painting)

* Develop custom computational analysis methods and visualizations as needed and provide ad-hoc support to cross-disciplinary project teams and platform efforts. Maintain a well-documented, reusable codebase, and traceable model history.

*Represent Primary Pharmacology Group and Discovery Sciences as a subject matter expert to cross-functional teams within Pfizer WRD

* Maintain scientific and technical expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and attending conferences. Opportunities to publish when appropriate. May have the opportunity to recruit summer interns or postdocs.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science or a related discipline with 3+ years of industry experience, OR Masters with >6 years of experience OR Bachelors with >10 years experience.

* Significant experience developing Statistical Models and visualization tools

*Fluency in modern scripting languages, cloud and cluster architectures, as well as the ability to write database queries

*Experience with NGS and transcriptomics data

*Image based analysis and feature extraction

*Experience with handling complex data types (proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, imaging, etc.)

*Excellent track record of external publications and professional service

*Outstanding outreach, teamwork and communication abilities are essential

* Knowledge of the drug discovery process and disciplines outside of core expertise

* Experience in biological and/or qualitative sciences

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

*Exposure to biological systems and pharmacological concepts in drug discovery

*Experience in the biopharmaceutical industry desirable

*Experience in computational analysis and biological interpretation of mass spectrometry data

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, lifting, bending, and walking. Ability to work on a computer (while standing or sitting). Ability to perform mathematical calculations and interpret data.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Candidate will be asked to travel to the Pfizer Cambridge, MA site to meet computational science and project team colleagues on a regular basis.
