Packaging Engineer I

This technical track position resides in the Commercial Packaging & Labeling organization at Gilead Sciences. The Commercial packaging team is mainly responsible for supporting new product launches and market extensions, leading capital projects, supporting packaging projects at contract manufacturing organizations, managing packaging component suppliers and ensuring uninterrupted supply of commercial products to our patients.

Specific Job Requirements:
  • Design, write, and execute packaging study protocols such as shipping qualifications, transportation studies, label adhesion, etc. and issue reports.
  • Create and update packaging specifications for various products and components. Create process flow diagrams and pallet patterns when required.
  • Review and approve commercial artwork for secondary packaging components. Manage labeling changes with packaging sites.
  • Interface with contract manufacturers in weekly meetings for projects and routine production. Review and approve CMO protocols, master batch records, specifications reports, and other relevant CMO documents.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams, to help meet complex project deliverables such as new product launches or start-up of new manufacturing/packaging sites.
  • Perform fairly routine tasks to aid technical investigations and assessment of deviations, particularly as related to data generation/gathering and analysis.
  • Prepares required engineering and manufacturing documentation, for revision and approval by manager/supervisor.
  • Works on assigned projects for various product types solid dose, sterile injectable products, biologics, through completion.
  • Overnight travel may be required up to 25% of time.


Knowledge & Skills
  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.


Education & Experience
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.


Preferred/Desired Experience
  • Working knowledge of CAPE, TOPS, Solid Works.
  • Internship experience with pharmaceutical or industrial packaging.
  • Knowledge of packaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of the FDA and Current Good Manufacturing Practices, ASTM standards as well as regulatory guidance documents.
