Join a Team that Lives to Improve Lives

People come to Genentech from across disciplines and across the world to solve our most challenging medical conditions. You’ll find inspiration in our passion for biotechnology, our purpose to positively impact the lives of millions of patients and our dedication to our people. Joining Genentech means being part of a tradition of inquiry that will change the world. It means embracing our failures as much as our successes. It requires a willingness to look beyond the edge of what's possible. And a focus on doing the day-to-day work that makes great science happen.

The following opportunity exists in South San Francisco:

Principal Scientific Researcher, Cellular and Tissue Genomics

Description

The Department of Cellular and Tissue Genomics within Genentech Research and Early Development is seeking a highly talented, creative, and motivated Principal Scientific Researcher to join our team. Our group’s mission is to develop and apply high content genomic technologies, such as single-cell profiling and massively parallel screens followed by single cell read-out, for biological discovery and design of novel therapies. The successful candidate will deploy cutting edge genome engineering and single-cell genomics tools with the goal of deciphering complex cellular and tissue circuits as well as guiding biological function in the context of health and disease. The applications of research conducted will span various biological areas, including regenerative medicine, gene and cell therapy, aging, and cellular reprogramming, with applications in immunology, lung regeneration, neuroscience, and oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for helping to design and implement pooled screens with multimodal single cell outputs (e.g. RNA, chromatin, protein, morphology, lineage, mutations)
  • Pursue scalable tools enabling massively parallel high information content screens
  • Design and engineer new screening platforms for application in complex cell, tissue, and in vivo models
  • Work together with computational teams to develop and apply models to describe molecular circuitry and identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets
  • Collaborate with disease experts across the different therapeutic areas
  • Contribute to high impact publications in high quality scientific journals and will have the opportunity to present externally through presentations at key internal and external meetings

Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in relevant fields, including systems biology, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology and/or biomedical engineering. The ideal candidate would have experimental and computational expertise in the field of genomics. Post-doctoral or equivalent experience desirable.
  • Strong publication record of impactful discoveries

Relevant experience with:

  • Novel NGS and genomics platforms, including single-cell RNA-sequencing, epigenomics, and proteomics
  • Gene delivery, including viral vectors, genome editing, and/or synthetic biology
  • Performing large scale single cell screens (e.g. Perturb-Seq) collecting various readouts in various settings including primary cells, cell lines, organoids, or in vivo models
  • Inventing and deploying new single-cell screening methods using CRISPR technology and applications in vivo, ex vivo, and in cell lines
  • Working knowledge of biostatistics or bioinformatics including high throughput omics and imaging data analysis (including scRNA-seq), visualization, and interpretation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work within a team comprised of diverse expertise
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
