Project Manager

The Laboratory of Molecular Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College is recruiting a project manager for a newly funded, large program focused upon mechanisms and consequences of pathology spread from the gut to the brain in models of Parkinson’s disease.  This is a laboratory research program, with interactive project directed by co-investigators at several institutions, including Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Karolinska Institute.  This is a three-year project that will require both a scientific background as well as extraordinary organizational and communication skills and collegiality.

The successful candidate will work directly with Dr. Michael Kaplitt, Professor of Neurological Surgery and Vice-Chairman for Research in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, who is the overall coordinating PI for the project.  This position will require coordination of activities, meetings and resource sharing between group members along with budget oversight and primary responsibility for reporting and meeting deadlines.  Additionally, this individual will facilitate collaborative interactions with other teams within the funding consortium.  Unlike many program management positions, this individual will be a key member of the research team, providing input for many aspects of the project along with participation in scientific meetings of the funding consortium.  Therefore, the successful candidate will preferably have a PhD or other advanced degree with a background in neuroscience, behavioral neurobiology, psychology or related discipline.  This is a scientifically-based project manager position that will not involve bench research, and therefore would be best suited for individuals who are interested in transitioning to other fields within science such as administrative, non-profit, publishing or commercial pharma or biotech project management.

Weill Cornell Medical College is the medical and biomedical graduate arm of Cornell University.  Located on the upper east side of Manhattan in the City of New York, Weill Cornell Medicine is within a complex of leading institutions, including the Rockefeller University and Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, that provides virtually unmatched opportunities for research collaboration and excellence within immediate proximity.  Neuroscience is a major focus of Weill Cornell Medicine, with additional resources available at Cornell University, particularly within the nationally recognized Department of Biomedical Engineering, which is home to two faculty members who are also collaborators in this specific project.  This position is funded for three years.

The laboratory is seeking a project manager for this fully funded position who are highly self-motivated, energetic, ambitious, and collegial.  In addition:

  • Candidates must possess a minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent in neuroscience, behavioral neurobiology, psychology or related field.
  • A PhD or other advanced degree would be a major advantage
  • Outstanding organizational, communication and writing skills are essential
  • Experience with grant and budget management and progress reporting is desirable
  • Complete fluency in English writing and conversation is required.

Interested candidates should send a letter describing their relevant background and interest in this position, a CV including bibliography and contact information for at least two references to Michael Kaplitt, MD PhD, Professor of Neurological Surgery and Vice-Chairman for Research in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine (
