Principal Bioinformatics Scientist -Viral Vaccines

ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer is seeking a talented, self-motivated principal scientist with strong background in software engineering to join our Viral Vaccines R&D team at Pearl River.

The successful candidate will work closely with a team of virologist, molecular biologist, bioinformatics scientist to design and implement cutting-edge flu and COVID-19 bioinformatics system. You will have the opportunity to build something exciting and lay the foundation for a sophisticated computational platform which combines genomics with antigenic data to predict circulating flu strains and monitor COVID-19 variant of concern.

Success at this position requires a firm grounding in full stack software engineering, back-end database, front-end web development, ability to work seamlessly in teams, and a strong focus on making our vaccine research program successful. The new hire will also gain experiences and skills to handle genomics sequences data and develop expertise in data centric workflow development and management.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for development and deployment of full stack COVID and flu virus tracking and change system
  • Apply broad experience in software development to build the bioinformatics system that are highly scalable and maintainable
  • Develop database and data management system for flu and viral vaccine programs
  • Implement web portal to support the visualization of genomics and antigenicity of flu data
  • Develop new method to predict circulating viral of concern
  • Conduct data and requirement gathering, data analytics and other duties as assigned
  • Manage timelines and deliverables


QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD, or master's degree in engineering, computer science, bioinformatics, or related field required. PhD is preferred
  • Six to eight years of experience in software development is required
  • Five years of experience with full stack development using some combination of these technologies Python, Perl, Flask, MySQL/Postgres/MongoDB, ReactJS
  • A proven track record of owning and developing complex full stack software solutions
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing bioinformatics software solutions
  • Highly experience with databases (SQL and NoSQL)
  • Advanced skills in at least 2 programming languages (Python, Perl, Java, C++, R)
  • Experience working with HPC schedulers (LSF, Slurm, Torque, Moab, SGE, etc.)
  • Experience working with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker) is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex problems.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment handling mutiple projects simultaneously with different priorities and timelines.
