Postdoctoral Associate - Cracan Lab (Role of Redox Imbalance in Cancer, Neurodegeneration and Aging)

Employer
Scintillon Institute
Location
San Diego, California
Salary
Competitive + Benefits
Closing date
Dec 20, 2021

Position Overview:

Dr. Cracan's lab is developing novel methodologies to enable modulation of the cellular redox environment with spatiotemporal precision. The methodology is based on native and engineered enzymes that are amenable to targeting to different cellular compartments. Our tools will lead to a better understanding of the role of redox imbalance in cancer, neurodegeneration and aging and hold therapeutic promise for reversing metabolic imbalances. Our lab is highly collaborative with local groups at SBP, TSRI, UCSD as well as other laboratories in the US and elsewhere. Dr. Valentin Cracan also holds an academic appointment in the Department of Chemistry, TSRI. For more information, see https://cracanlab.com/ and Twitter: @VFCracan.

We are currently looking for a collaborative, self-motivated Postdoctoral Associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Valentin Cracan at the Scintillon Institute situated in the academic cluster of La Jolla/San Diego, CA. The Postdoctoral Associate will have the opportunity to define compartmentalization of redox metabolism in normal physiology and disease, including aging-associated metabolic changes in different cellular and organismal backgrounds. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in the application of novel genetically encoded sensors and tools to study redox biology with a special focus on mitochondrial biology and redox cofactors NAD+ and NADP+. As one of our current research directions, the Cracan lab is actively exploring electron transport chains in various lower organisms including bacteria and Protozoa. Techniques that are routinely used in the laboratory include protein production in different overexpression systems, protein purification using a state of the art chromatography system, protein biochemical characterization using UV-Vis spectroscopy and other biophysical methods, protein engineering, mammalian cell culture, various high-throughput biochemical assays, high-content imaging and LC-MS/GC-MS based metabolomics.

Pristine coastline, fabulous beaches, year-round sunshine and mild temperatures make San Diego, CA a fantastic place to work and live. In addition, San Diego is situated not far away from Los Angeles, CA and many other outstanding destinations along the coastline.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Highly motivated individuals with a PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or related area with a track record of scientific accomplishments as exemplified by first author scientific publications are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to recently graduated candidates with strong career motivation.
  • Practical experience with molecular cloning, protein expression/purification and mammalian cell culture is preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience in any aspect of redox biochemistry, mitochondrial biology, molecular metabolism and/or cellular bioenergetics is strongly encouraged.
  • Ability to work in a team environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Strong presentation skills and ability to discuss data at laboratory group meetings.

Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to contribute to ongoing projects and expand novel independent research projects in a collaborative research environment. Responsibilities include experimental design and execution, data analysis, team and conference presentation, literature review and paper writing. Competitive stipend and a generous benefits package commensurate with experience will be provided according to NIH guidelines.

Application Instructions:

To apply, please send the following materials as a single PDF file to Dr. Valentin Cracan (vcracan@scripps.edu):
