Staff Scientists - Blue Sky Initiative "Seeing the Invisible in Protein Kinases"

St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking scientists with an interest in protein kinases to join a dynamic, comprehensive, inter-disciplinary initiative in the Department of Structural Biology. The Blue Sky Initiative "Seeing the Invisible in Protein Kinases" is supported by $35 million in institutional funding and will extend the ultra-high field NMR spectroscopy and biochemistry approaches developed recently by the Kalodimos lab (Xie et alt.,Science, 2020) to detect and structurally characterize the distinct conformational states populated by kinases. This strategy will be integrated with by data-science and computational approaches developed by the Babu lab (Marti-Solano et al., Nature, 2020), to systematically characterize the conformational landscape of the human kinome.

Preferred skills and experiences

 

  • Extensive experience in applying NMR techniques in characterization of the structure and dynamics of large proteins, including backbone and methyl assignment methodologies

     

  • Experience in using both automated and manual methods for assignment of both backbone and methyl groups

     

  • Experience in performing characterization of protein dynamics using CEST

     

  • Proficient in data processing using NMRPipe

     

Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct experiments/projects independently under the overall direction of supervisor. Including construct design, chemical shift assignment, structure determination, and dynamics studies
  • Critically evaluate viability of kinase for dynamics and/or structural studies
  • Analysis of CEST relaxation profiles
  • Structure calculations using CYANA

     

Minimum Education

 

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required

     

Minimum Experience

 

Senior Scientist

 

  • Ten (10) years relevant post-degree work experience is required with a bachelor’s
  • Eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a master's degree
  • Six (6) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD
  • Proficiency in using nmr-fam Sparky, Bruker TopSpin, and CYANA preferred
  • Experience using MAGIC algorithm for automated methyl assignments of methyl preferred
