The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Technician B to join our team in a full-time position to work within the division of Clinical Genetics.

The Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University is committed to innovation and excellence in clinical medicine, education, research, community health, global health, and the development of our faculty and staff. 

This position will support the department by providing research support to the laboratory under Principal Investigator Dr. Gustavo Maegawa. The Maegawa laboratory is investigating lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs). These are inherited metabolic diseases that are characterized by an abnormal build-up of various toxic materials in the body’s cells as a result of lysosomal enzyme deficiencies. These diseases affect multiple organs and systems, including the skeleton, brain, skin, heart, and central nervous system. Significant progress has been made in the therapeutic development. However, approaches to treat the common neurological manifestations of several LSDs are still an unmet need.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform scientific experiments for analysis and standardization
  • Assist with the development of validation assays to test in cellular and in vivo models (mostly murine)
  • Validate candidate compounds from screenings using cell lines from different patient and animal models
  • Evaluate data accumulated in ongoing research
  • Prepare statistical analysis
  • Prepare written report of research findings
  • Review literature pertinent to the research area
  • Perform field surveys to identify appropriate biological specimens
  • Perform and coordinate routine maintenance on lab equipment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training, and experience.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred.
  • One year of related experience preferred
  • Knowledge in medicinal chemistry
  • Knowledge of tissue culture procedures, molecular biology procedures and techniques including, but not limited to molecular cloning, transfection, infection, RNA isolation and Northern blotting, fluorescence microscopy, tandem spectroscopy
  • Experience working with murine models
  • Knowledge of data analysis software, such as GraphPad, PubChem, PDB, AoxSeg and Volocity
  • Knowledge of basic proteomic techniques including enzyme kinetics, subcellular fractionation, immunoprecipitation, immunoblots, pulse-chase assays, confocal and live-cell microscopy and immunofluorescence assays
