Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Laboratory of Viral Diseases

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

National Institutes of Health

Department of Health and Human Services

The Laboratory of Viral Diseases (LVD) is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated, and creative individuals to join its ranks as postdoctoral fellows. LVD is composed of nine independent investigators who seek fundamental insights into the complex biology of human viruses. Current research covers a broad array of viral pathogens (HIV, poxviruses, herpesviruses, papillomaviruses, influenza viruses, and flaviviruses) and explores virtually all facets of viral biology, including virus entry, regulation of gene expression, mechanisms of genome replication, virion morphogenesis, latency-persistence, pathogenesis, immunity, and evolution. LVD investigators also apply their expertise to develop viral vaccines and therapeutics. Visit LVD’s website for more information about LVD investigators and ongoing LVD research.

LVD offers an outstanding research environment within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) on the main National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The following sections and projects are actively recruiting postdoctoral fellows:

  • Cellular Biology Section (Jon Yewdell, Section Chief) – Generation of MHC class I peptides as well as virology and immunology of influenza A and SARS-CoV-2 viruses.
  • DNA Tumor Virus Section (Alison McBride, Section Chief) – Analysis of Human Papillomavirus Replication using Spatial/In situ techniques.
  • Emerging Virus Immunity Unit (Julie M. Fox, Unit Chief) – Interrogation of antibody-based protection during alphavirus infection.
  • Genetic Engineering Section (Bernard Moss, Section Chief) – Molecular biology of poxviruses, virus-host interactions, immune defense mechanisms, and recombinant vaccines.
  • Molecular Genetics Section (Thomas M. Kristie, Section Chief) – Transcriptional/epigenetic regulation of herpes simplex virus during lytic infection and reactivation from latency.
  • Quantitative Virology and Evolution Unit (Patrick T. Dolan, Unit Chief) – Single-cell sequencing of host responses and within-host evolution in mouse models of viral infection. Applicants with bioinformatics, statistics and computational biology experience are especially encouraged to apply to this section.

Qualifications

Applicants must be completing or should have completed a Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M., have a strong record of biomedical research, and have less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience. U.S. citizenship is not required (visa requirements apply).

Salary

Training positions are supported directly by NIH intramural funds. Postdoctoral trainees receive a competitive stipend and comprehensive health insurance for the trainee and their immediate families. Postdoctoral fellowships are renewable yearly for up to 5 years.

To apply

Interested individuals should submit a one-page cover letter with a description of their research interests and future directions, a curriculum vitae (CV), and the names and contact information for three references directly to individual LVD principal investigators or to the following address:

LVDResearchOpport@niaid.nih.gov.
