Final Filing Date: 10/12/2021

The newly formed UC Davis Neuroprosthetics lab is looking to hire a full-time software engineer to help build the next generation of implanted brain computer interface (BCI) technology for treating people living with neurological injuries and diseases.  This Computation and Data Scientist Research Specialist will be part of a team of researchers performing cutting-edge neuroengineering and neuroscience research, with the goal of creating neural prostheses to help people with paralysis (e.g., translating brain signals into speech for people with strokes or ALS). This engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and validating software for processing high-volume neural data in real time and decoding it to control external devices. The role requires skills from a variety of domains, including real-time software development, digital signal processing, machine learning, systems/computational neuroscience, audio processing, and more. The code developed by this engineer will be deployed for use by actual BCI clinical trial participants and will be a critical part of advancing this neurotechnology.

Required Qualifications

• BS Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience designing, implementing, and testing high-reliability software with millisecond-level precision.

• Experience with modern machine learning frameworks (e.g. scipy, TensorFlow, pyTorch, keras, etc.).

• Experience working with raw sensor signals (e.g., audio, video, LIDAR, and/or electrical signals).

• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and overcome complex technical challenges in analysis of large data sets.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate with principal investigators and unit managers regularly and effectively.

• Self-motivated and willing to work overtime when needed to ensure completion of contract deliverables and grant/contract proposals.

• Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and apply new and upgraded computerized systems to job responsibilities.

• Organizational and time management skills to successfully work on multiple concurrent projects, in collaboration with multiple colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

• Highly advanced skills and demonstrated expertise with “big data” management.

• Preference is for developing on Linux with experience with a systems-level language (C, C++, Rust, etc.).

• Previous experience with neural signal analysis or vocoder design. Familiarity with parallel processing and Simulink Realtime.

• Experience with neural data analysis with single-unit recordings.

• Experience with REST server design, websockets, and Redis.

Special Requirements

• This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
