Postdoctoral position: Directed evolution of selective matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors
A postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Protein Engineering funded by NIH R01 research project grants is available immediately in the laboratory of Prof. Evette S. Radisky, Department of Cancer Biology, Mayo Clinic Florida. The successful candidate will pursue protein engineering projects developing novel and selective inhibitors based on the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP) scaffold, targeting matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) of interest in cancer and lung fibrotic diseases. Qualified candidates should possess a Ph.D. in bioengineering, biochemistry, chemistry, or related discipline, or will complete all requirements for the Ph.D. by the end of 2021, and must show a demonstrated record of productivity. Applications from more experienced postdoctoral candidates are also welcome. The ideal candidate will possess expertise with the yeast surface display (YSD) platform, including library construction, transformation, screening via FACS, and characterization and analysis of selected clones and populations. Applicants with expertise in alternative platforms for directed evolution may also be considered. Additional skills that would be advantageous but are not required include recombinant protein expression and purification in various systems, enzyme kinetics, quantitative methods for measuring protein-protein interactions (surface plasmon resonance or biolayer interferometry), and/or structural biology (x-ray crystallography and/or computational modeling). The ideal candidate should also be highly motivated, independent, willing to work collaboratively and contribute to team efforts, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
The laboratory of Prof. Evette S. Radisky is a small, interactive, interdisciplinary group of researchers with common interests in proteases, protease inhibitors, and proteolytic processes in cancer. We work closely with collaborators at Mayo Clinic Florida, other Mayo Clinic sites, and at several other institutions. Prof. Radisky is highly committed to the scientific and professional development of trainees in the group. Depending on the interests of the successful candidate, training opportunities may exist to expand their skills into new areas such as biological models of cancer or lung fibrosis, or structural biology of protease/inhibitor interactions. Support is available for attendance at national or international meetings to present results of the research. Opportunities for career advancement within the institution may be available, contingent on experience and performance of the candidate.
Mayo Clinic Florida is located in a pleasant suburban area 18 miles from downtown Jacksonville and 4 miles from popular beaches. Jacksonville is a vibrant city with population of 1M on the northeast Atlantic coast of Florida, 140 miles north of Orlando and 140 miles south of Savannah, Georgia.
Salary will be commensurate with level of experience and typically follows the NIH NRSA postdoctoral pay scale. The Mayo Clinic offers a competitive package of benefits including excellent health and dental insurance for postdoctoral fellows and their dependents. The initial research appointment will be for a period of one year, with annual contract renewals pending satisfactory research progress. It is anticipated that the projects and position will continue for three years with a possibility of longer extension.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.
