Environmental Health and Safety Senior Program Manager

Job description:

This role works independently with minimal supervision in leading the Biosafety program and serving as the Biological Safety Officer (BSO) at the Gilead Foster City campus. Specific duties of the BSO include:

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

  • Overseeing compliance as defined by the Bloodborne Pathogen and Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standards, Medical Waste regulations, and all other etiologic agents use requirements from federal, state, and local regulations

  • Provide technical and regulatory compliance advice assessing physical and health risks associated with the use of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, human or non-human primate (NHP) tissue or cells, and organisms containing recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule research (R/SNA)

  • Coordinate Biosafety Committee meetings and perform risk assessments of all research protocols submitted

  • Coordinate third party resources providing occupational health and medical surveillance support of the Biosafety program

  • Performing Injury and Illness investigations, root cause analysis, data trending and laboratory safety and compliance inspections

  • Providing general and program specific EH&S training

  • Serving on the Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call rotation

  • Provide general expertise related to laboratory safety

  • Serving as a primary point of contact for customer groups

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required:

  • BS or BA degree in a relevant science degree with 8+ years progressive experience in EH&S , or a MS degree and minimum 6 years of experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of BSL2 and BSL3 operations

  • Demonstrated implementation of EH&S programs in a research and development environment

  • General understanding of relevant occupational health, safety and environmental regulations

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and standards governing etiologic agents

  • Strong focus on customer service

  • Ability to multi-task, effectively prioritize and deliver work products in a fast-pace environment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills effective for a diverse audience including senior management

  • Effective in working in a matrix organization

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills Preferred:

  • Certification such as CBSP (or eligible for certification)
