The Vanderbilt Department of Medicine seeks an innovative physician-scientist or clinical investigator to direct the Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) and to hold the Addison B. Scoville Jr. Chair in Medicine.  The ID division consists of 60 faculty and in the last year completed over 25,000 outpatient visits at locations in Davidson and surrounding counties. The division staffs primary and consultative infectious diseases inpatient teams at Vanderbilt University Hospital, as well as supporting both in-person and telehealth consultative practices at satellite hospitals across the mid-south. The ID Division additionally provides comprehensive care for patients with infectious diseases at the Nashville Veteran’s Administration Hospital. The Division provides specialized, multi-disciplinary care for patients with a wide range of infectious diseases, supervises the infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship programs at Vanderbilt and several affiliate hospitals, coordinates care for patients with HIV, and supports one of the largest transplant programs in the nation.

The Division is robustly funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the Veterans Affairs Research Programs, and is one of 13 divisions that comprise the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Department of Medicine, which is itself currently ranked #2 in the NIH Blue Ridge Ranking. The ID Division hosts the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research, a CFAR funded research program, and the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Center which provides a medical home for people living with HIV. Investigators span the breadth of expertise in microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, virology, and human genetics. The ID Division is additionally home to several investigators holding dual appointments with the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health.

Training in Infectious Diseases includes matriculation of five fellows per year, a large educational program that is competitive for entry. Research for these fellows is facilitated through an NIH funded T32 program in addition to institutional support to develop emerging young faculty. The ID Division is a part of the Department of Medicine Harrison Society, which supports up to seven Physician-Scientist Training Program residents annually. The ID Division additionally supports a fellowship in Transplant ID, and beginning in 2022, the ID Division will host the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Fellowship in Addiction Medicine. Junior faculty are funded by K-level career development awards as well as prestigious awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the Doris Duke Research Foundation, among others.

The Division enjoys robust collaborations with the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, providing training for joint Medicine and Pediatric Infectious Diseases through the fellowship training program and supporting research training for Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellows.  The Division has close collaborative relationships with the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology where many of the faculty have joint appointments.  The Division is an active participant in the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology, and Inflammation (VI4), the Vanderbilt Center for Immunobiology (VCI), and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH).  The Division also works closely with the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.  The work is strongly supported by the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and our large de-identified patient cohort and genetic biorepository, BioVU.  Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University provide exceptional core facilities supporting a wide array of research activities. 

The successful candidate will have a national and international reputation in Infectious Diseases with a strong record of sustained scholarly accomplishments, leadership abilities, and commitment to mentoring.  The candidate must have a commitment to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion.
