The intramural program of the National Eye Institute (NEI) invites applications for the position of Senior Investigator and Chief, Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research (LSR), a tenure-eligible appointment in the Intramural Research Program (IRP) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland. In addition to leading an independent research program, as Laboratory Chief, the successful applicant will provide scientific and managerial leadership for the LSR. Research resources (e.g., space, operating and personnel budget, animal care, access to NEI and trans-NIH core facilities) are provided by the NEI Office of the Scientific Director. Among the Chief’s most important responsibilities are providing fair and equitable stewardship of research resources and ensuring a supportive and nurturing environment for trainees. The Chief has supervisory responsibility over the other principal investigators in the LSR (currently four).

The Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research studies the visual system as a model for understanding how the brain uses sensory information to drive behavior. Facilities are particularly well-suited for addressing research questions in awake behaving nonhuman primates and include dedicated computer systems, a machine shop, an electronics shop, and a histology lab.

The NIH IRP is a scientifically vibrant, highly collaborative environment with extensive scientific resources, including state-of-the-art brain imaging (for animals and humans) and high-performance computing facilities. The environment is world class for the study of primate neurophysiology, and the NIH Clinical Center provides unique opportunities for collaborative studies of human patients with diseases related to the visual and oculomotor systems.

Candidates must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree(s) and an outstanding record of accomplishments in systems neuroscience research. This position is not restricted to U.S. citizens. All employees of the Federal Government are subject to federal Standards of Ethical Conduct, and all NIH researchers are expected to abide by the Guidelines and Policies for the Conduct of Research in the Intramural Research Program at NIH

Candidates should submit the following via email to nei-dir-lsr-lc-app@nih.gov : (1) Brief cover letter; (2) curriculum vitae (should include a list of publications and a description of mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research); (3) Statement of current research interests, including a discussion of how they are well-suited to the NIH IRP environment (3 pages maximum); (4) PDFs of up to five, relevant publications; (5) Three letters of recommendation (to be sent by the writers directly to nei-dir-lsr-lc-app@nih.gov)

Applications will be reviewed starting on November 8, 2021, but applications will be accepted and considered until the position is filled.
