Our Global Laboratory Animal Medicine (GLAM) is looking for an experienced certified veterinary technician. Primary responsibility for observations, diagnostics and treatments to animal colonies housed through directives of the GLAM veterinarians. Additional responsibilities include: Provides training and consultation to animal care and investigator staff in areas of expertise through directives of the Training Manager and/or Training Team Provides study support for development of animal models and investigator research (e.g. anesthetic monitoring, surgical preparation, dosing, sampling) Responsible for documentation of animal histories and regulatory compliance of animal-related studies to comply with regulatory agencies (e.g. USDA) and professional standards Primary responsibility for on-site veterinary care during weekends and holidays This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following: PURPOSE/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducts daily observations, treatments and diagnostic procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species to provide high quality animal care. Works well independently and with others to efficiently handle multiple priorities in a variety of areas on all campuses. Plans the orderly direction of work, effectively establishes priorities, efficiently implements and performs procedures in support of colony health programs and investigator research. Conducts animal health procedures (e.g. injections, IV catheterization) with skill and proficiency in a variety of laboratory animal species to ensure the health of the research animal colony. Performs routine and more complicated procedures (e.g. anesthesia, radiology, dosing, sampling) with proficiency in a variety of laboratory animal species to provide quality animal care and in support of research. Coordinates and performs quarantine and preventative programs (e.g. vaccinations, tuberculosis testing, blood collection, sentinel monitoring tasks) in laboratory animals with proficiency. Responsible for accurate documentation of clinical cases, anesthetic procedures and other animal-related information that meets requirements for quality veterinary care and regulatory agencies (e.g. USDA). Appropriately manages documentation (e.g. enters data in a timely manner, archiving). Provides training and consultation to IBPS and investigator staff. Works closely with the IBPS training team to coordinate hands-on and one-on-one training programs in common laboratory animals (e.g. handling, dosing, injections, euthanasia, blood collection, anesthesia). Manages the rodent training colony. Serves as a liaison between the veterinarians and scientists: notifies each of animal health concerns in a timely manner, coordinates schedules preventative programs for research animals with scientists and veterinary staff. Stocks and maintains areas of responsibility in an organized and "hospital clean" state that meets regulatory requirements. Complies with applicable written procedures (e.g. SOPs, standards, policies). Participates in management monitoring procedures. Proficient at basic computer skills relevant to the job (e.g. computer record entries, Excel, Word). Proficient at performing basic clinical pathology and microbiology procedures, as needed. Makes appropriate use of all personal protective equipment provided and conducts his/herself in a manner to afford protection against work-related hazards. Attends OSHA mandated training sponsored by GSK Assists in assessment of critical cases and pain management of the animal colonies. Assists in making recommendations on more complicated health issues (e.g. post-operative care of newer animal models, critical care patients). Coordinates and manages the sentinel monitoring program and specialized animal colonies, as needed. Proficient at performing tasks related to the sentinel program (anesthesia, blood collection, necropsies) and/or maintenance of specialized animal colonies. Assists in coordination and development of environmental enrichment and socialization programs in a variety of laboratory animal species, as needed. Writes policies, SOP's and guidelines as directed. Assists in supervising students and externs. Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:· Master's degree in Laboratory Animal Science plus two-or-more years of experience in research, or Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline plus four-or-more years of experience in research, or a graduate of a recognized program for veterinary technicians plus six-or-more years of experience in a research setting Certification as a veterinary technician 3 year experience with rodents in research setting 3 year experience performing clinical veterinary skills 1 year experience training staff in animal related procedures Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Prior experience working with nonhuman primates preferred Experience in a pharmaceutical company preferred Knowledge of regulations relevant to laboratory animals preferred Good interpersonal and communication skills Good organizational and teamwork skills Why GSK?
