Land Surveying and Mapping Unit (Position Code LT017 and LT018 - LIMITED TERM POSITION - Up to Two (2) Years)
Assistant Surveyor I: $6,229.60 - $7,976.80 monthly
Assistant Surveyor II: $6,879.60 - $8,805.33 monthly

We are seeking an Assistant Surveyor l/II to join our Land Surveying and Mapping Unit on a 3-year limited term basis. The Limited Term Assistant Surveyor l/ll will perform a variety of field work to support survey data collection and analyses for various Valley Water projects including construction, photogrammetric, and right of way. They will operate a variety of survey equipment on a survey crew, record notes and make calculations in the office, utilize a variety of technical engineering computer software/ hardware such as (CADD) Computer Aided Design and Drafting and (GIS) Geographic Information Systems, and will perform related work as assigned.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Utilize survey equipment to determine points, lines, angles, elevations, and distances for property, boundary, construction, hydrographic, photogrammetric, and topographic surveys, run lines and grades for assigned projects, and may make field adjustments within specified limits.
  • Conduct field investigations to obtain and verify engineering data, make measurements, and rough sketches, locate public utility lines, prepare limited design drafting, take field notes as assigned, and reduce field notes and calculations in the office.
  • Perform a variety of support activities related to survey task completion as assigned, clear brush and debris and ensure a clear line of sight, ensure that survey crew has adequate stocks of supplies.
  • Locate and set the alignment or elevation of monuments and points, assist in locating new or additional structures or equipment or in placing stakes or markers for Valley Water or contractor use, perform geodetic and cadastral surveying.
  • Prepare and review technical maps, drawings and visual aids, graphic presentations, drafting materials, and other items as needed for various Valley Water projects using computers and manual methods, amend or revise drawings during design and construction phases, prepare as built drawings.
  • Research, collect, compile, and analyze evidence and documentation for boundary determination, obtain all relevant documentation concerning the location, dimensions, areas, monumentation, and other aspects from public records, title reports, survey notes and format data for presentation materials and graphic displays.
  • Maintain records of work performed as assigned. Read, interpret, and assist in preparing maps, drawings and diagrams as assigned.

Assistant Surveyor I
None

Assistant Surveyor II
Two (2) years of experience conducting surveys in the field and/or performing office surveying and mapping work.

Assistant Surveyor I
Ability to:

  • Learn principles and practices of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information System programs (GIS).
  • Perform field surveying and technical activities.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Research, collect and analyze various topological data, and technical data.
  • Perform mathematical calculations.
  • Use a variety of computer equipment and applications.
  • Read and interpret maps, plans, and diagrams.
  • Communicate clearly via two-way hand-held radio.
  • Read and interpret legal descriptions of real property.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Assistant Surveyor II
In addition to the qualifications for Assistant Surveyor I:
Ability to:

  • Research, collect and analyze various topological data, and technical data.
  • Work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Perform various field surveying work activities.
  • Use, adjust, and maintain various survey instruments.
  • Use a computer aided drafting system.

Ideal Knowledge:
Assistant Surveyor I
Some Knowledge of:

  • Common desktop applications and software as well as specialized software related to the work.
  • Proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Algebra, geometry, and plane trigonometry as applied to surveying.
  • Principles and practices of filing and recordkeeping.
  • Methods and techniques of field note reduction.

Assistant Surveyor II
In addition to knowledge of an Assistant Surveyor I, some knowledge of:

  • Algebra, geometry, or trigonometry.
  • Survey and office software.
  • Principles and practices of global positioning systems (GPS).
  • Principles and practices of surveying as applied to property, topographic, and construction surveying.
  • Use, adjustment, and maintenance of various surveying instruments.
  • Principles and practices of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information System programs (GIS).
  • Principles and practices of boundary determination and land title research.
  • Right of Way procedures and principles.

Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by 12 college semester units in engineering, geography, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, or a related field.

LIMITED TERM POSITION:
The assignment period will be up to 3 years and such time period may be adjusted as needed by Valley Water management.

  • If the limited-term appointee is internally hired and released from the position prior to the end of the time period, the appointee will be subject to Valley Water's reassignment process and/or appropriate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) layoff provisions.
  • An internally hired limited-term appointee will be covered by the EA MOU and eligible for all pay and benefits described in the MOU.
  • An externally hired limited-term appointee will be considered at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

An externally hired limited-term appointee will be covered by the EA MOU and eligible for all pay and benefits described in the MOU with the exception of the following articles/sections:

  • Article 3, Section 10: Temporary Promotion Pay
  • Article 3, Section 11: Out-of-Class Assignment
  • Article 6, Section 4(D): Deferred Compensation (Limited-term appointees may participate in Valley Water's 457 deferred compensation program however they will be ineligible for Valley Water matching funds and participation in Valley Water's 401(a) plan)
  • Article 8: Leaves of Absence (Valley Water will provide a leave of absence as required by law under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), California Family Rights Act (CFRA) and Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL))
  • Article 11: Workforce Development
  • Article 12: Employee Performance/Evaluation
