To help make this vision a reality, GSK opened the Rockville Development Center for Vaccines Research (RDC) in 2015 in Rockville, MD. This state-of-the-art facility is GSK's global vaccine R&D center in the US and is home to more than 400 employees across multiple global functions. The RDC is the R&D hub for several candidate vaccines in development, including therapeutic vaccines for chronic disorders, as well as the commercial and life cycle management hub for GSK's seasonal influenza, meningitis and zoster vaccines. GSK is currently hiring for a Head of Preclinical R&D to grow, develop, manage, and lead the Preclinical R&D US team to drive the continued innovation of our vaccine portfolio. This individual will report directly to the Site Head of the RDC and will be the single point of accountability for preclinical vaccines R&D in the US. This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following: Provide inspiring leadership and effective stewardship of Preclinical R&D staff in the RDC Support professional development and qualification of staff by implementing training programs to expand the capacity and capabilities of the team. Foster collaboration with Preclinical R&D teams from other development centers to maintain a consistent way of working. Manage the growth, development, and performance of the Preclinical R&D team. Set project-driven objectives and goals and conduct annual performance evaluations. Drive the discovery, characterization, and preclinical development of new vaccine candidates, allowing the Discovery Performance Unit (DPU) to deliver the most promising assets to the Vaccine Development Teams (VDTs). Ensure robust early development data packages to support the CDEP activities (including clinical read out strategy) for programs and assets in the RDC. Bring Preclinical issues/questions/decisions to appropriate governing and advisory bodies. Ensure timely filing of patents and submission of manuscripts to peer reviewed journals. Assume responsibility for the development and oversight of preclinical data packages that meet the standards for ethics, scientific merit, regulatory compliance, and corporate goals for approval of products. Create and maintain a network of collaborations with external scientists who bring cutting edge technology and solutions to vaccine development challenges. Ensure appropriate preclinical representation on the Toxicology Working Group, Safety Review Team, Regulatory teams, and other relevant transversal teams. Keep the team at the forefront of relevant disciplines to meet the expectations of the scientific community and regulatory authorities for a top-tier vaccine company. Act as senior preclinical representative for the RDC, Vaccines R&D, and broader GSK internally (member of governing or advisory bodies) and to the various academic research institutes externally, for projects under the scope of the RDC portfolio. Ensure that research activities are being performed according to all applicable internal and external regulations, guidance, policies, recommendations, and laws Why You? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: Doctoral Degree (PhD or MD) or equivalent. 10+ years of experience in preclinical vaccine research and development. 7+ years of experience directly managing scientific teams. Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Experience directly leading and managing R&D teams in a cross-functional, matrixed, and fast-paced environment and navigating pressures, deadlines, and conflicts of priorities. Experience building the capabilities and competencies of scientific professionals to optimize the overall performance and effectiveness of R&D teams Proven ability to think and plan strategically, to work with members of other functions within a matrix environment and well-developed leadership and stakeholder management skills. Strong influencing skills and resourcefulness to facilitate collaboration across the organization. Capable of multi-tasking but with attention to detail, working on multiple complex projects and delivering on objectives on time/on budget. Ability to establish communication networks within GSK Vaccines, GSK Pharma, and external organizations. Experience collaborating with and recruiting top-tier scientists. Why GSK?
