Individuals interested in translational cancer research are encouraged to apply for postdoctoral training in the Nakamura laboratory at the University of California San Francisco Department of Radiation Oncology.  Dr. Jean Nakamura, the Principal Investigator, is a physician-scientist and oncologist in the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center and leads a diverse team active in cancer metabolism, radiation carcinogenesis, normal tissue effects of radiation, radiation effects in space, and clinical research.

Important problems in clinical oncology, cancer prevention and interception drive research in the Nakamura laboratory, which is a highly interdisciplinary group with projects spanning the areas of cancer genomics, metabolism, pre-clinical models of disease, neurosciences and biomedical imaging.  A fundamental objective across all projects is the goal of developing translatable applications.  Active areas of study include: how metabolic mechanisms enable tumorigenesis and the formation of metastases, mechanisms underlying normal tissue complications after cancer therapy, how aging influences responses to carcinogenic exposures, and developing countermeasures to ionizing radiation exposure in space activities.

The postdoctoral fellow will develop a leadership role in multiple projects and the opportunity to interface with diverse scientists; our laboratory members and collaborators come from varied backgrounds with representation of broad areas of science.  For the postdoctoral position, individuals with research experience in cell biology, biochemistry, metabolism, genetics, neurosciences or use of pre-clinical mouse models are encouraged to apply. Experience in computational approaches/bioinformatics is desirable.  There are opportunities for leading research projects that integrate clinical studies/clinical endpoints as well, and individuals with a particular interest gaining exposure to clinical research and applications, are encouraged to apply. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in highly collaborative research and interact with multiple research groups (both clinical and basic science) within UCSF as well as nationally and internationally.  Fluent communication skills in English and a PhD are required.

Career building opportunities include development of scientific presentation and writing skills, development of leadership skills in collaborative research, as well as paper presentation at national and international meetings.  Appropriate candidates are individuals who will be awarded or recently awarded PhDs.  Individuals completing their dissertations in the near future are welcome to apply, however an awarded PhD is required prior to offer of joining the lab.

Our laboratory is located in the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building at the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF.   The Mission Bay campus is a dynamic, scientifically vibrant environment with numerous shared resources to support cutting-edge research. Basic science, translational and clinical research programs are heavily represented and very active at this campus, making it a truly unique and ideal location for cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Please send curriculum vitae and contact information for three references to Jean Nakamura, M.D., Department of Radiation Oncology, University of California, San Francisco, 1450 Third Street, Room 266, San Francisco, CA 94158.  Email: Jean.nakamura@ucsf.edu.  UCSF is an equal opportunity employer.
