Position Overview:

The Team System Leader (TSL) will have an enterprise wide impact and sphere of influence to maximize team effectiveness across the drug development lifecycle from early stage to commercial launch and beyond. S/he will be accountable for advancing or developing principles, practices and metrics for continual evolution of our team system and will personally coach our leaders, e.g., Program Strategy Leaders, Global Development Leaders, Global Commercial Leaders, Therapeutic Area Heads, and others in functions and teams on how we can work with greater agility to make high quality decisions and execute on our plans to drive Gilead's portfolio success.

The selected Leader will have direct reports (to be defined) and will develop and oversee a rotational mentorship program to enable broader team system understanding among, and contributions from, Gilead functional leaders. In addition, the role will be expected to maintain consistent, multi-level communication with Research Team Members, Development Team Members, Commercial Team Members, Manufacturing Team Members, and others including Senior Management, and the Executive Team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accountable for creating and leading the Team System Office and its menu and approach to service offerings for what the organization needs today and then continually measuring and adapting those services to the needs of the organization.
  • Develop team effectiveness solutions and provide performance optimization advice and/or coaching and motivating directly or through others (internal trained coaches or referrals to appropriate external coaches) especially in areas such as agile leadership, influencing, team contribution skill building, productive debate, decision quality, team dynamic interventions such as conflict management.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to understand how they can better develop and support their functional representatives to teams; also how they might consider realigning their organization structures and processes to better align to teams and to distributed decisions at the right level.
  • In collaboration with PPM and Program Strategy Leaders:
    • Develop and implement a lifecycle plan for our Team System Office
      • Develop vision and strategy for the team system
      • Build and augment team effectiveness solutions and capabilities
      • Identify and manage critical path activities and resources required
      • Role expectations for all team system participants
      • Identify and document risks, likelihoods, severities, and key mitigations to our success in evolving how we are running programs, working in agile ways, and making quality decisions
      • Capture and communicate progress; escalate issues with proposed solutions
    • Communication
      • Accountable for clear and timely communication about the Team System throughout the enterprise such as speaking at Town Halls, LT meetings, 1:1s, really championing the Team System while listening and sensing the organization and its needs for clarity and support to work in new ways
      • Present Team System updates, strategic issues, options, and recommendations to the Portfolio Committee
    • Coaching
      • The TSL will contribute to the development of cross-functional team members; to freely share expertise and help identify opportunities for team members to grow as leaders

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Work with Development and Commercial Therapeutic Area Leaders, the CMO and CCO to support how they could more effectively support teams including building a talent bench for team leadership roles.
  • Drive close alignment among research, development, and commercial groups which have internal-to-the-function teams within the overall team system.
  • Hiring: Participate in hiring panels for new Program Strategy Leaders, Global Development Leaders, Commercial Team Leaders, and Project Managers.

Capabilities and Requirements:
  • Strong leadership skills and deep expertise in agile teams and innovation team effectiveness. Truly understand the benefits of team-based work and able to communicate this understanding with passion to others.
  • Highly collaborative instincts and a track record of resolving conflicts with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clinical scientists, biologists, manufacturing experts, as well as with regulatory and commercial colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • High degree of organizational awareness and understanding of change management and leading innovation.
  • You have had exposure to drug development and understand what it takes to shepherd a molecule through its lifecycle to realize maximum value for its targeted population(s) at Gilead and the kinds of inherent tensions there are in drug development decision making.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Advanced or professional degree highly desirable (e.g., MS, PhD, or MBA)
  • 10+ years of innovation leadership with significant experience in agile ways of working in non-software companies.
