The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Treatment and Recovery (DTR), NIAAA. This Division includes two branches: Treatment, Health Services, and Recovery Branch (THSRB) and Medications Development Branch (MDB). THSRB plans, stimulates, develops, supports, and manages multidisciplinary research programs on treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD), determinants of post-treatment recovery, and factors that affect the delivery of AUD services in real-world settings. MDB plans, stimulates, develops, supports, and manages medications development programs to treat AUD.

The Director, DTR, provides dynamic leadership in guiding the Division’s overall operations and activities, including the implementation of Institute policies and resource allocation. The incumbent manages and supports National Research Service Award (NRSA) training programs (both Institutional training programs and individual fellowships) to ensure that adequate numbers of highly competent scientists are engaged in current and future alcohol treatment and services research. The incumbent also manages two Alcohol Research Centers that focus on alcohol treatment. The incumbent serves as the principal advisor to the Director of NIAAA on treatment and recovery issues, including research to advance personalized treatment for alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and senior scientific advisor to the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism on pending grant applications and status of programs. The incumbent leads/manages the evaluation of programs on clinical research therapies for AUD, including pharmacologic, behavioral, and combined approaches to service delivery, and based on the outcomes, identifies research priorities and recommends to the Director, NIAAA, those programs that require further evaluation, modification, or removal from the active research program. The incumbent provides effective and strong leadership within the NIAAA, the NIH, and the extramural and intramural research communities to ensure that clinical research efforts are continuously reinvigorated, and research on health behaviors is innovative. This will require a trans-disciplinary perspective/approach to re-direct the course of AUD treatment research based on basic, translational, and clinical research advances. The incumbent is also expected to lead collaborative efforts and initiatives within NIAAA and establish collaborations with NIH senior scientists through participation in trans-NIH working groups.

The incumbent formulates annual budget requests, selects key staff, promotes and maintains a diverse workforce, and oversees staff development and training. The incumbent provides professional guidance and leadership to a staff of 13 professional FTE positions and is responsible for the overall direction of the staff to attain the most effective and efficient operation of the DTR’s programs. The incumbent manages a current annual budget of approximately $88 million.

The selected candidate will be expected to hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree. Criteria for selection includes: experience in developing, evaluating, and implementing behavioral and clinical therapies relevant to alcohol misuse and AUD; experience in managing/leading a complex clinical research organization; experience and success in leading diverse and inclusive teams, experience and expertise in communicating clinical research findings and programmatic information to scientific and non-scientific audiences; a strong publication record in clinical and behavioral research; and experience in developing, implementing and managing multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research programs on treatments for AUD and the determinants of post-treatment recovery.

The Director, DTR, is an Excepted Service position (Title 42), and the successful candidate will be appointed at a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
