The Department of Forensic Medicine at the Faculty of Health, Aarhus University invites applications for two positions as either Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor as per 1 March 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Forensic medicine is a comprehensive research area and may be addressed in several ways, i.e. through pathology, traumatology, epidemiology, bio-imaging, psychology, paediatrics, general medicine or public health. Therefore, we invite researchers from the health science, natural science or social science area to apply for the position. We value an innovative and original research plan that contributes to the future development of forensic medicine.

Positions as Tenure Track Assistant Professor are fixed-term full-time positions with a view to permanent employment as Associate Professor. Positions as Associate Professor are permanent full-time positions.

Department of Forensic Medicine
The department employs 70 employees, of which 35 have an academic background, while 10 are tenured academic staff. Our mission is to contribute to the prevention of crime, accidents, premature deaths and suicides through research, education and forensic investigations. As an employee at the department, we expect you to contribute achieving this goal. The department comprises two sections providing commissioned work for the Danish National Police.
The Section of Forensic Chemistry conducts quantitative and screening analysis for illegal and legal drugs and their metabolites in human biological samples as well as non-biological samples (police seizures). The Section of Forensic Pathology performs autopsies, crime scene investigations and clinical forensic examinations. Both sections hold either ISO 17025 or ISO 17020 quality standard accreditations. Apart from the commissioned work, the department has three research units, which focus on bioanalytical chemistry, forensic imaging and clinical forensic medicine. Your job responsibilities as Tenure Track Assistant Professor

As Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of the highest international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with both Danish and international colleagues.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of the highest international quality, including publication.
  • Teaching, guidance and examination of Bachelor’s and Master's degree students, as well as possible supervision of PhD students.
  • Grant application to attract external research funding.
  • Collaboration with relevant national and international research environments.

Your job responsibilities as Associate Professor
As Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine, you will contribute to the department’s research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the department both independently and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. You possess excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network which you are able to bring into play in your contribution to the academic development of Aarhus University and its profile both nationally and internationally. 
Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • Teaching and supervision of Bachelor’s and Master's degree students and contribution to the development of new teaching activities.
  • To contribute to the funding with the help of external research funding.
  • Supervision of PhD students and contributing to the development of the faculty's PhD courses.
  • Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world.

You will report to the Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine.

Your competences as Tenure Track Assistant Professor
You have independent research-related qualifications at a high international level. You are a clear communicator and you have some degree of experience of supervision and teaching at Bachelor’s and Master's degree level and potential of becoming a successful group leader. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, as will experience with the establishment of PhD courses and external research collaborations. You have  international experience through international research stays or international research collaboration.
As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good work environment.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a tenure track Assistant Professor position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Your competences as Associate Professor
You have established yourself as a prominent researcher and you possess documented solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have broad international cooperative partnerships and experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders, and you have potential of becoming a successful group leader. At the same time, you have experience of attracting significant competitive research funding from national and international funding bodies. It is an advantage if you have stayed or been employed at one or more internationally recognised research institutions.

As a person, you are dedicated and possess excellent communication skills. You are able to build relationships based on trust with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer you communicate the newest and relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring and supportive.
You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

For both types of positions, we expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

  • The tenure track position starts out with appointment as assistant professor with a view to permanent employment as an associated professor. Permanent tenure as an Associate Professor is conditional upon you being assessed as qualified as such no later than 6 months before the expected transition to Associate Professor at the latest. You will be appointed a supervisor by Head of Department and evaluation meetings will take place at least every half year.
  • Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
  • Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime Tenure Track Assistant Professor with minimum 3 years of working experience after achieved MSc degree is DKK 486,969.17 or DKK 512,713.62 with minimum 4 years of working experience after achieved MSc degree. The base salary includes a position related supplement and pension (17.1 %). Additional supplement(s) for special qualifications can be negotiated. Authorisation supplement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
  • Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.

Terms of employment – Associate Professor

  • Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of appointment as an assistant professor, but may also be obtained in other ways.
  • The applicant is required to have completed a university pedagogical programme or an equivalent programme.

  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime associate professor is DKK 615,806.39 (including a position related supplement, a pre-agreed associate professor supplememt and pension (17.1%)). Additional supplement(s) can be negotiated dependent on experience, special qualifications and performance of special functions. Authorisation supplement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
