The Center for Addiction Research is striving to build effective collaborations among scientists with the varying expertise required to advance our understanding of the science of substance use disorders (SUDs). The CAR is composed of faculty across the UTMB campus with interests in SUD research and education.  Drug overdose deaths, misuse, and substance use disorders (SUDs) constitute a major, high-impact health problem in the U.S. where drug overdose deaths claimed a reported 88,990 people over a 12-month study period. 

 

 

 

The UTMB Center for Addiction Research Seeks experienced and highly motivated Research Scientists for the following positions:

 

 

 

1. Lead Medicinal Chemist (Research Scientist III) to work towards psychopharmacological innovations that can be commercialized to improve mental healthcare.  The successful candidate will ideate and drive research efforts for novel compounds and drive them towards lead optimization and IND-enabling studies. The key aspects of this role are to propose and execute synthetic strategies for small molecules.  The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of drug discovery, and a track record of excellence in comparable environments.

Required Education and Experience:  a Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry, 4 years of synthetic organic chemistry lab experience, a strong knowledge of current synthetic methods, a strong knowledge of organic chemical reactions, mechanisms, and the ability to plan and develop complex multi-step syntheses and some understanding of medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

 

1. Lead Translational Biologist (Research Scientist III) to drive psychopharmacological innovations that will be commercialized and improve mental healthcare. The position will lead research efforts for novel compounds through lead optimization and IND-enabling studies. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of drug discovery, and a track record of excellence in comparable environments. This position bridges academia and private companies, creating a unique position that integrates science into the shared goals of all stakeholders. Proficiency with Windows 10 computer and software systems as well as statistical software programs (SPSS, Prism, R, or similar).

 

 

Required Education and Experience:  a terminal degree (Ph.D.), demonstrated success in the field or master’s degree and a minimum of two additional years of relevant experience, such as lead scientist; demonstrated knowledge of the drug discovery and development processes; knowledge of documentation in a research environment; experience with creating manuscripts and presenting data in a collaborative team environment; advanced organizational and project management skills.

 

1. Lead Molecular Biologist (Research Scientist III) to drive psychopharmacological innovations that will be commercialized and improve mental healthcare. The position will lead research efforts for novel compounds through lead optimization and IND-enabling studies with their expertise in molecular biology and protein chemistry. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of drug discovery, and a track record of excellence in comparable environments. This position bridges academia and private companies, creating a unique position that integrates science into the shared goals of all stakeholders. Proficiency with Windows 10 computer and software systems as well as statistical software programs (SPSS, Prism, R, or similar).

Preferred Experience - Candidates with excellent written, organizational and documentation skills, have demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and problem solve, possess experience in working as part of a multidisciplinary team and those who have previous neuroscience research experience are highly desirable.
