An invigorating opportunity is available in the Environmental, Health & Safety Department as we strive to build a world class EH&S team here at Gilead in Foster City. The successful candidate will be joining a highly motivated and cross functional team to develop and elevate a proactive Safety culture via execution of various initiatives among multiple functions across our Foster City campus. You must be an independent self-starter with superior analysis, multitasking and problem solving skills for simple to complex situations. You will be relied upon as a subject matter expert in the areas for which you are responsible, and also should be eager to learn about and support other areas of the team when needed. This individual must possess great interpersonal capabilities that facilitate explanation of complex topics straightforwardly to educate and influence colleagues and customers to ensure successful implementation of EH&S programs and directives as assigned.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

The EH&S Program Manager will serve as an agent of change within their areas of responsibility while effectively ensuring compliance and proliferation of best practices throughout customer organizations.

Basic essential duties for all EH&S team members include:

  • Injury and Illness investigations, root cause analysis, and trending

  • Providing program specific and general EH&S training, including New Hire Orientation for employees

  • Serving on the Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call availability

  • Serving as a primary point of contact for customer groups

  • Hazard identification and mitigation

    Specific duties for this role focus on independent management, with minimal supervision, of construction and industrial safety programs at the Gilead, Foster City campus to ensure compliance and advancement of culture while providing world class customer service.

    Construction Safety

  • Support and partner with Gilead Project Managers to ensure General Contractors are managing safety according to Gilead expectations in all on-campus activities.

  • Update all EH&S Construction Safety Program policies, documents and forms

  • Review and enforce Methods of Procedure (MOPs) and Disturbance Avoidance Protocols (DAPs) to mitigate potential for contractor or employee injury associated with construction tasks and minimize impact of construction activities on existing Gilead operations.

  • Supervise vendor service team responsible for project site Safety Surveys and Incident Reporting.

  • Ensure that General Contractors work expediently in response to any serious safety observations or incidents and mitigation of related root causes.

    Industrial Safety Programs

    The successful candidate will be expected to identify, develop and maintain programs to ensure compliance in all areas required. Potential examples include:

  • Confined Space

  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

  • Fall Protection

  • Crane Safety

  • Electrical Safety

  • Ladder Safety

  • Hot Work

  • Work Permit and related processes

  • Machine and tool Safety

  • Forklift safety

    Experience Preferred

  • Proven effectiveness at improving processes to increase efficiency and customer service

  • Experience working in a matrix management organization

  • Management of contingent workforce

  • Budget management

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

  • BS or BA degree with 8+ years progressive relevant experience in EH&S and industry, or a MS degree and minimum 6 years of relevant experience

  • Knowledge with all relevant CAL-OSHA, DOT, and NFPA regulatory requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills Preferred

  • Professional Certification such as CSP

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry
