Postdoctoral Associate

Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years' experience conducting numerical simulations with application to laser propagation or plasma evolution. Demonstrated expertise in analytical methods used to solve Fresnel integrals as demonstrated by contributions to previous research projects. Experience conducting experimental research related to laser-plasma interactions (LPIs).

Brief Description:
The primary purpose of this position is to investigate the spatiotemporal control over laser propagation with the goal of generating an ionization wave with prescribed characteristics. This will be conducted primarily through the expansion of an existing in-house numerical codebase. Theoretical investigation of Fresnel integral to gain insights into the results of the numerical model will be an important component of this work. Another important component is investigating the scaling of the properties of the plasma channel resulting from this ionization wave. Although primarily theoretical, the incumbent will have the opportunity to participate in experiments that will aim to validate the results of the numerical studies. These experiments will be conducted in collaboration with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester. The holder of the position would also participate in the supervision of students on this research project. The successful candidate will work effectively in a team environment with other physicists and engineers. The primary duties of this position include:

  • Numerical investigation of laser propagation through hyperchromatic optics using phase terms associated with common and novel optical elements
  • Theoretical investigation of Fresnel integrals in the limits relevant to experiments and optimizing the phase terms for desired focal properties
  • Design experimental layout to test the hypotheses emerging from the theoretical and simulation studies
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.
  • Present results of research at conferences and workshops.
  • Assist PI with preparation and submission of papers and applications for external research funding, progress reports to sponsors, publications. Develop experimental ideas based on mathematical models or simulations which allow to perform novel experiments
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.
