Chair-School of Physics

The School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology (“Georgia Tech”) invites applications for the position of Chair and Professor of Physics. Priority will be given to an outstanding researcher and educator with an accomplished record of effective leadership, research, and communication. The successful candidate will also have a strong track record in teaching and mentoring students, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The expected rank at appointment is at the level of full professor, however applicants at all tenure-eligible ranks will be considered. Applications from groups underrepresented in the sciences are particularly welcome.  

The successful candidate will promote collaboration among faculty, students, and staff in order to develop and engage in an ambitious strategic plan for the future of the School of Physics with emphasis on: (1) research in existing and future core areas and/or cross-disciplinary directions; (2) innovative and empowering training at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral levels; and (3) inclusive and collaborative governance.  

The School of Physics is a central component in the College of Sciences at Georgia Tech with excellent research programs and a broad undergraduate and graduate teaching curriculum, including courses impacting most of the Institute’s undergraduate students. Research strengths include astrophysics, atomic and optical physics, quantum matter and nanoscience, soft matter, biophysics/physics of living systems, and non-linear sciences. A major asset is its leadership in multi- and interdisciplinary scholarship along with other highly ranked programs in the sciences and engineering at Georgia Tech.  The School of Physics currently has 37 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 8 teaching faculty, 250 undergraduate physics majors and 130 graduate students, with an operating budget of $7.5M and $9M in external research funding in 2020.
