The Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) seeks a highly collaborative, strategic and visionary leader as its next president and chief executive officer. Nominations, inquires and applications are invited.
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the president provides strategic and administrative leadership for SURA and is responsible for ensuring strong relationships with its many partners, including its 60 member institutions, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab or JLab).
SURA is a consortium of research institutions in the United States and Canada and was established in 1980 as a nonprofit corporation. SURA serves as an entity through which colleges, universities and other organizations may form collaborative partnerships with one another, and with government and industry, in furthering knowledge and the application of that knowledge in the physical, biological and other natural sciences and engineering while developing, pursuing and executing on program development opportunities.
Originally established to design, build and operate what is now Jefferson Lab – an international scientific user facility funded by the DOE, SURA now operates JLab through Jefferson Science Associates (JSA). Over the years, SURA has evolved into a multi-agency government contractor as well as a facilitator of collaboration among its members and government agencies to: advance information technology and high performance computing, understanding of coastal and environmental phenomena, and space science and technology; promote the education, outreach and training of the next generation of scientific and technical leaders; and promote scientific discoveries that impact lives and drive economic development.
The next president will be expected to lead SURA's efforts to re-compete successfully for the continued management of Jefferson Lab; build a high-performing and collaborative team; identify, evaluate and develop new business opportunities; and engage diverse partners in the common pursuit of collaborative research. The president will have a record of successful leadership of complex research and scientific operations and possess both the interpersonal and managerial skills necessary to operate an effective enterprise. Significant experience working with government contracting would be ideal as would an understanding of the federal infrastructure and the ability to develop strong working relationships, particularly with the Department of Energy. The ability to evaluate, develop, prioritize and execute on new business opportunities is essential.
