The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) (www.igzev.de) is based in Großbeeren, near Berlin. With around 120 employees and an annual budget in excess of €10 million, including third-party funding, the IGZ conducts research into the fundamental understanding of plant systems in an effort to advance the development of sustainable horticulture. Its research focuses on systems within plants, between plants and the natural or horticultural environment, and between plants and humans. Thanks to its research, the IGZ makes a major contribution to solving global challenges such as biodiversity, climate change, urbanisation and food security. It makes science-based recommendations for healthy food systems and for sustainable interactions with the environment. The institute is active internationally, and has excellent links with agricultural science institutions in Brandenburg and Berlin. The IGZ has modern offices, laboratories, greenhouses and fields at its site in Großbeeren.

The IGZ is a member of the Leibniz Association, and receives core funding from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK) of the Federal State of Brandenburg and from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

The IGZ is looking to fill the following the position from 1 October 2022:

Director of Research (f/m/d)

Your tasks

  • As Director of Research (f/m/d), you will be responsible, together with the members of the Executive Board, for the strategic research orientation of the institute. You will represent the IGZ both internally and externally, and especially at the interface with science, business, politics and society.
  • Together with the members of the Executive Board and with the involvement of IGZ staff, you will design and shape the strategic and scientific development of the institute, its future research programme, activities for the development of next-generation scientists, as well as the dialogue and transfer of research outputs with regional, national and international stakeholders from science, business and society.
  • By developing and applying modern biochemical and genetic methods, and exploiting the possibilities for application in horticulture, your research work will make a significant contribution raising the institute’s international visibility and profile.

What we ask

  • As an internationally recognised scientist with a background relevant to the research areas of the IGZ, you are well acquainted with both the German and the international science system.
  • You possess strong strategic, methodological and conceptual skills and a systemic understanding of horticultural research, which will enable you to successfully develop the IGZ in terms of structure and planning within the Leibniz Association and to strengthen cooperation with strategic partners.
  • You have several years of experience in a leadership position (ideally involving interdisciplinary research groups), management skills, a motivational leadership style, and take a distinct integrative approach, also beyond the boundaries of your own organisation.
  • You have experience in policy advice, transfer, spin-offs and economic cooperation.
  • Excellent German and English skills, or the willingness to acquire them, and the ability to communicate effectively and convincingly at all levels round off your profile.

What we offer

  • An attractive leadership position with extensive room for manoeuvre in a dynamic working environment.
  • Remuneration in accordance with the W3 salary of the Federal State of Brandenburg, supplemented by the possibility of performance-related remuneration.
  • Collaboration with renowned scientists in an international environment in the field of horticultural research.
  • Appointment to the position of Director of Research for a period of five years, reappointment desired.
  • We are keen to establish a joint professorship with a higher education institution.

We encourage a healthy work-life balance. The IGZ attaches great importance to equal opportunities. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualifications. The IGZ embraces diversity in its workforce, and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates, irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, belief or ethnic origin. In an effort to increase the proportion of female employees in this area, we specifically urge women scientists to apply for the position.
